Miss Sarah Ihuoma, a female National Youth Service (NYSC) Corps member serving in Plateau, has renovated six classrooms and constructed four new toilets at the LEA Primary school, Nding Loh.
Ihuoma, whose place of primary assignment is Salvation Secondary School, Nding Loh, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that she discovered the poor condition of the school when she was moving around to familiarise herself with the community.
“I came to Nding and found a new home and a family.
“While staying with the people, I took out time to take a look around the community school and what I saw was disheartening.
“The school was an eyesore; unworthy of a learning environment.
“The walls and floors of the school were broken, some of the classrooms were without desks and there was no toilet in the school.
“I felt the burden to help but was scared of the financial implications,” she said.
The corps member said she, then, came across Mr Jack Gyang, a concerned member of the community, who advised her on how to go about achieving the goal.
According to her, it was not an easy endeavour as she faced lots of challenges, discouragements and failed promises.
She, however, thanked God for the successful execution of the project.
NAN also reports that some 2019 Batch ‘C’ corps members have distributed COVID-19 palliatives to vulnerable persons in Dorowa community, also in Barkin Ladi local government area.
Mr Majekodunmi Olatunjito, who spoke on behalf of the other corps members, said that the gesture was to cushion the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the beneficiaries.
Olatunjito said that in spite of the current economic downturn occasioned by the pandemic, the 2019 Batch C corps members decided to give back to the people of Dorowa community.
The items distributed included seasoning, salt, rice, Garri, Groundnut oil, tomato paste, soaps and customised face masks.
The State NYSC Coordinator, Ms Caroline Embu, said that the corp members’ gestures to their various host communities were part of the NYSC scheme.
Embu said the scheme was established to promote unity and self-help in the rural and semi-urban communities.
She urged governments, Non governmental Organisations (NGOs) and public spirited individuals to continue to support the programme for the good of the society. (NAN)
