Why You Should Listen To Music While Studying

Studying and music

Nowadays, students are taking good advantage of IT gadgets and utilising them in their study life. Significantly, students have learned that music can actually help them study and retain information better than they would without it.

It has been observed that students listening to music experience some degree of memory formation when learning information. This is attributed to the fact that multiple parts of the brain are activated at once.

Stimulating both auditory stimulation along with visual information being processed by the brain can help improve memory retention. The dopamine released is partially responsible for helping us remember what we are doing and why.

Dopamine is released when you are doing something that’s enjoyable, especially when it brings on some type of pleasurable reward.

Your ability to remember is improved while listening to music because your brain releases dopamine every time it hears new information, which makes you want to listen more intently and therefore remember it more clearly.

Hence, a reason why some students have a hard time focusing on their studies is because it is not an enjoyable activity for them. Putting yourself in a good mood whenever you need to study will help improve your memory and attention span.

You can be in a good mood by listening to your favourite music, and you’ll find that it’s much easier to focus on what you need to learn. The music shouldn’t be loud, as high volume can make you distracted because of all the other extra noise.

Also, when studying, try to play music that is instrumental without any words being sung along with it. This can help improve your concentration because you won’t have anything to distract you from the information that’s being presented.

Memory retention can also be improved while studying by listening to low volumes of different types of music. It can create a different mood in your brain that will help you learn what you are being taught.

If you want to make studying more enjoyable and remember things better, then try listening to music while studying.

You will also learn that you improve your creativity as well as allow yourself to relax more when you listen to music as opposed to not listening at all.

Although, I have heard students say they need “peace and quiet” while studying, as according to them, music is a form of distraction, which they are better of with.

Howbeit, students that see music as a form of distraction while studying, have a discrete means of making the activity enjoyable, as the enjoyment itself is what makes them continue. Otherwise, they find it inconvenient to retain information, and do so for the sake of assessment or examination.
