The word ‘ Family‘ has different meanings depending on its usage. A dictionary meaning of family is said to be a group of people who live together with similar relations. These relations could be by blood, marriage, law or custom, or members one’s intimate social group.
It is common that when we hear the word family, what comes to mind first are people who are bonded by Blood usually consisting of father, mother and children. This is true but I strongly believe a family is not just restricted to just ties alone.
Family can be said to be that person who is always there and understands you . That group that stands for you and watches your back. That individual who seeks to protect your interests and opinions. That crew that sees to your growth and discipline you when necessary. That shoulder that is there for you to lean on in your low times. That hand that stretches out to help when in need. That feet that pushes you to become a better version of yourself. Those eyes that look out for opportunities from which you can benefit. All these and more, can be likened to what a family is.
Wherever I find myself, I tend to look for individuals I can call family. Be it a school setting, religious setting, social setting etc as a good family helps you as an individual. In some cases, The family finds you and bring you closer to them.
For a family to work effectively, there have to be a mutual understanding, a particular belief system and set of values that are in sync with both parties. You have to be with one mind, working towards achieving a set goal and growing together as a body.
During my service year, I was posted to a place where I virtually knew no one. However, on getting there I found some group of persons who didn’t know me from ‘Adam’ but took interest in me. My association with them helped me tremendously and gave me support that I didn’t really miss being away from home. I was glad I had found a ‘ home away from home’, now that is a family.
This relationship worked because we had similar beliefs and value system. It flowed because there were no strong contradictions and everyone was welcomed for who they are.
Your family should be one that respects you, seeks your opinion, supports you, believe in you and even admonishes you if need be.
The one you call family is that one you are rest assured you can find solace in. So, check out the people you call family if they are really family.
