While there may be a long and deep complicated history between these two countries ; Russia and Ukraine, that most of us from the outside may not even know of- we can only work with the surface story.
However, it is no longer news that the Russian president Vladimir Putin is making moves to reconstitute USSR by all means- declaring war in the process. I don’t think he ever forgave Ukraine for pulling out from Soviet Union (Russia feels threatened by this) and has made this known by not acknowledging Ukraine’s independence- Get over it Russia!
Ukraine as an independent country can follow the paths they believe will bring them National security and advancement. And as a country, the Ukrainians have decided to fight back and defend themselves and their rights as a Nation by retaliating to Russia’s recent attacks.
There is conflict going on.
When two countries are attacking each other, it automatically affects all other Nations (whether you share a border with them or not).
Let’s dive in and see how this conflict/war may affect Nigeria:
The fuel scarcity crisis in the Nation may be heated up in the coming days. Pump prices will rise and transportation will become more expensive than expected. Nigeria may be one of the largest producers of oil in Africa but Russia is the largest producer of natural gas & energy in all of Europe and even supplies America 3% of their oil.
There will be a lot of issues sprouting up concerning countries in debt, and we know how much debt burden Nigeria has with China- even if we can’t visibly see or feel the impact of where the money has been put into. We are in debt! And I don’t know if measures have been put in place to start paying these debts but we should put in mind “the China-Zimbabwe story” and put our so called “giants of Africa” crown in place and ACT fast!
This Russia-Ukraine war may also lead to inflation – as global trade activities will be tampered – Nigeria is big on Imports. So we may have issues with all the favorite things and food we love to import. Whatever happened to our Agricultural sector and innovation? It is not being supported.
The Americans are in solidarity with the Ukrainians – does this mean that China will stand with Russia?
What can you do personally? Pray for peace. Pray for Nigerian leaders, and Pray for all world leaders.
