The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has asserted that 31 cases of monkeypox have been discovered in the country.
The NCDC made this known in its ensuing monkeypox situation report published on Friday, June 10, 2022, as made available to a Geeky Nigeria Correspondent.
As earlier reported, the NCDC launched a monkeypox National Emergency Operation Center in reaction to the risk appraisal carried out, which ascertains Nigeria to be at a high risk for a monkeypox epidemic.
The significance of this activation was to enhance the coordination of monkeypox based alertness actions around Nigeria, the NCDC hinted.
“From January Ist to 5th June, 2022, there have been 110 suspected cases in total and 31 confirmed cases from twelve (12) states-Adamawa(5), Lagos (6), Rivers (3), Cross River (2), FCT (2), Kano (2), Delta (2), Bayelsa (2), Edo (2), Imo (2), Plateau (2), and Ondo (1). One death was recorded in a 40-year-old man with co-morbidity that was receiving immunosuppressive drugs,” the report reads.
“There were 10 new positive cases in Epi week 22, 2022, from six states -Edo (2), Rivers (2), Plateau (2), Lagos (2), Ondo (1) and Imo (1),” NCDC maintains in its release.
The World Health Organization stated that monkeypox is a viral zoonosis (a virus passed to humans from animals) with symptoms very similar to those sighted in in the past in smallpox patients, which is clinically less deadly.
Monkeypox is caused by the monkeypox virus which emanates from the orthopoxvirus genus of of the Poxuridae family. There are two clades of monkeypox virus: the West African clade and the Congo Basin (Central African clade).
WHO has educated the public that the monkeypox virus is contracted by close contact with injuries (lesions), body fluids, respiratory droplets. And infected items like bedding. The incubation period of monkeypox is normally from 6 to 13 days but can vary for 5 to 21 days.
