The National Grid has collapsed again, on Wednesday, July 20, causing blackouts in some parts of Nigeria.
This was confirmed in a statement by the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) on Wednesday, around 11:00am.
“Dear customers, we regret to inform you of a system collapse on the national grid at precisely 11:27 am today, Wednesday, July 20. We are in talks with the Transmission Company of Nigeria to ascertain the cause of the collapse and a possible restoration timeline.
“We will keep you updated on the situation,” the Disco said via its Twitter handle on Wednesday,” EKEDC stated.
This would be the sixth time the grid would collapse 2022.
Prior to the collapse, The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) had issued a statement on Monday, that there would be a drop in power generation on Monday.
The drop, Geek Nigeria gathered, was as a result of planned annual “preventive maintenance” on the line bay at Lekki Transmission Substation in Lagos.
According to TCN, during the maintenance period, about 50MW will be interrupted, affecting power supply to Lekki phase 1, Oniru, Elegushi, Waterfront, Igbo Efon and Twenty-first Century Estate in Lagos state.
