Primary school pupils from Sunshine Nursery and Primary School, Ile-Ife, Osun have organised a protest in solidarity with the Ongoing Strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The protest was staged a few hours before the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) planned a two-day nationwide protest calling on the federal government to intervene in the strike.
The pupils, aged four to seven, staged their protest outside the Obafemi Awolowo University main campus gate in the morning.
They equipped themselves with banners showing various inscriptions, such as “Small but Mighty”, “My Future Counts”, “Stand Up ASUU, Stand Up Us”, “I am the future ASUU, make no mistake about it”.
The female teachers that accompanied them cried out “Students, what do you want?” the pupils replied in unison, “I see ASUU, fighting for me.”
The rather mini-protest by the pupils got the attention of passers-by, which caused traffic jam at the university’s gate for more than an hour.
Upon hearing the staged protest, the Chairman of OAU ASUU, Dr Adeola Egbedokun, noted that the demonstrators were calling the federal government to consider the future of students and terminate the strike.
