In early hours of October 25, 2022, the WhatsApp app of users in Nigeria was unable to send or receive messages.
According to reports gathered by a Geeky Nigeria correspondent, the WhatsApp downtime was due to a server outage from the Meta-owned company.
Although, as the time of reporting, no official statement has been issued by Meta regarding the downtime.
However, when contacted by the media, a spokesperson for Meta had this to say:
“We’re aware that some people are currently having trouble sending messages and we’re working to restore WhatsApp for everyone as quickly as possible”.
Downdetector, a website that tracks outages by collating status reports from a number of sources, reported that there was a high increase in the number of users reporting WhatsApp’s outage.
According to Downdetector, users are complaining that their messages are not getting delivered. Even when the messages are delivered, the app fails to highlight the delivery status.
In Nigeria, the downtime was evident from 8:40am. Although messages were only marked sent but not delivered.
Afterwards, messages could not be sent, as all attempts ended up in queue, which could have been attributed to poor connectivity.
UPDATE – Reports reaching Geeky Nigeria from users, as at 12 noon, is that WhatsApp is back online, as messages are now being delivered and received.
