College of Medicine, (CMUL) at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has held the 17th Horatio Oritsejolomi Thomas memorial lecture and 61st Founder’s Day in Lagos.

Geeky Nigeria reports that the event took place at the Old Great Hall of the college with the theme “Transforming Healthcare and Medical Education Through Digital Innovations: From AI-Assissted Interventions to Edu-Tech”.

The guest lecturer, Prof Oladapo Ashiru said that “digital innovation in healthcare is the wave of the future, and it is already happening.

“The future of digital innovation in healthcare and medical education is incredibly promising, and it’s evident that we are already well into this transformative journey.

“Artificial intelligence (AI) stands at the forefront of this revolution, with its potential to revolutionise healthcare delivery.

AI’s ability to continuously monitor and analyse patient health data, including data from fitness trackers, provides real-time insights into individual activity levels and heart health.

“This data–driven approach empowers healthcare professionals to create highly personalized treatment plans, ensuring more effective and efficient care,” he said.

Speaking, the Chief of Staff to the president, Hon Femi Gbajabiamila said that digital health was a broad, multidisciplinary aspect that refers to using information and communication technologies in medicine and other health professions to manage illness and health risks and promote wellness.

Gbajabiamila who was represented by the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Tunji Alausa said that since his assumption of duty, he has worked tirelessly to interrogate the health data architecture in Nigeria.

He said he was doing so with the aim of translating our data into one critical aspect of health industrialisation that by implication would become a huge success of revenue generation for our country.

He said he hoped to equally improve our digital health scope as a country considering the high impact it could have on our health system.

The Provost of the College, Prof David Oke reiterated that CMUL, UNILAG through the efforts of their founding father had laid a strong track record of its triple mandate of Teaching, Research and Service.

Oke said that “one of the visions of the college will be a great Center of learning and scholarship and a training ground for men and women dedicated to the service of their fellow men and women”.

Also, the Vice Chancellor, UNILAG, Prof Folasade Ogunsola said that this memorial lecture was a great way to celebrate a Nigerian medical pioneer specialising in facial reconstructive and plastic surgery.

Ogunsola who the Deputy Vice-Chancellor represented, Prof Lucian Chukwu said that you would agree with me that the lecture delivered in honour of Prof Horatio Oritsejolomi Thomas addresses pressing national and international issues, especially on economy and health matters.

She said that the series of lectures in honour of our founding fathers are part of our priorities to showcase their great works which they would continue to build on.
