Times Higher Education (THE), a British magazine that specialises in higher education news, analysis, and rankings has announced results for the World University Rankings 2025.
The results, announced on Wednesday, saw the University of Oxford retain the number one spot for the ninth year in a row.
Oxford University solidifies its position as the world’s top university, holding the title longer than any other institution in the history of the rankings. Oxford surpasses Harvard’s eight-year reign, which ended in 2011.

Across the Atlantic, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) achieves its highest ranking ever, securing second place globally and becoming the top US university. MIT surpasses Stanford, which drops to sixth, its lowest position since 2010, due to declines in Teaching quality, Research environment, and International outlook.
Harvard rises to third, and Princeton jumps to fourth. Notably, MIT and Princeton have demonstrated steady improvement over the past decade, emerging as quiet contenders among the world’s elite institutions.
In Nigeria, Covenant University (CU), a renowned private university in Nigeria, retained its top spot, solidifying its position as a hub for quality education.
