The Lagos State Government has approved the upgrade of Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) to a specialized medical university, named the University of Medicine and Health Sciences.
Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule, made the announcement at a stakeholders’ meeting.
According to Sule, the draft law establishing the university has been approved for submission to the Lagos State House of Assembly. The university will have a network of clinical training facilities across the state, with Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) serving as the primary oversight clinical training facility.
The Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the project.
“A sizeable expanse of land has been made available at Ketu-Ejirin in Epe to serve as the main campus of the university which will house the administrative buildings and the basic medical science programmes, while the clinical training will be at LASUTH and other designated clinical training facilities across the IBILE administrative divisions,” he said.

The innovative plan for the new University of Medicine and Health Sciences involves utilizing clinical personnel and infrastructure from well-equipped general hospitals and private hospitals and laboratories in Lagos to train a larger number of medical professionals .
This move is expected to significantly boost the state’s medical infrastructure and counter the emigration of doctors and other medical personnel abroad.
According to Prof Abiodun Adewuya, Provost of LASUCOM, the college is ready to support the transition to the new university, expressing gratitude to the state government for their commitment and sincerity ¹. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration has demonstrated its ability to successfully transition the college into a full-blown university, which is welcome news.
“The government under the leadership of Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu has shown beyond doubt its ability to successfully transit the college to a full-blown university and so the commissioner’s message is definitely good news.
“Let me assure everyone that the college is ready to support the government to achieve this goal.” he said.
