OpenAI, in partnership with non-profit organization Common Sense Media, has launched a free training program to empower teachers with the skills to effectively integrate artificial intelligence into their classrooms.
The “ChatGPT Foundations for K-12 Educators” course aims to demystify AI concepts and promote responsible usage in education.
Targeting educators teaching kindergarten through 12th grade, the initiative focuses on practical AI applications.
Teachers can learn to leverage AI tools like ChatGPT for lesson planning, administrative tasks, and personalized learning experiences. The course covers essential topics such as data privacy, AI ethics, and foundational AI knowledge.
Leah Belsky, OpenAI’s Vice President and General Manager of Education, emphasized the importance of equipping both students and teachers with AI skills for future career development. “The adoption of ChatGPT among students has been significant, and many parents support AI as a tool for enhancing education,” Belsky noted.
The program, hosted on Common Sense Media’s website, has been piloted in several school districts with positive feedback. Early participants reported gaining valuable insights and strategies for implementing AI in their teaching practices. A survey revealed that 98% of course completers felt it provided actionable ideas for their classrooms.
Since its debut in November 2022, ChatGPT has gained popularity for its generative AI capabilities. However, concerns over its misuse for cheating and plagiarism led to restrictions in some schools. This training initiative addresses these concerns by guiding educators on responsible AI integration.
Accessible globally at no cost, the program does not require a ChatGPT subscription. OpenAI’s partnership with Common Sense Media is expected to expand, with additional resources and initiatives planned to support AI adoption in education.
This collaborative effort demonstrates OpenAI’s commitment to promoting responsible AI use in learning environments and enhancing education through innovative technology.
