Meet Me Next Christmas is an American Christmas rom-com written by Molly Haldeman and Camilla Rubis. It was released by Netflix on November 6, 2024.
Plot Overview
Christmas Eve
It is Christmas Eve, the streets are painted red, bells are jingling, and the Christmas spirit is vibrant. While everyone is gearing up to welcome Santa, Layla (Christina Milian) is stuck at the airport because of a delayed flight.
She’s supposed to meet her boyfriend for their annual tradition of attending the Pentatonix Christmas concert. But this year, it seems Layla won’t make it. At this point, all she can hope for is a Christmas miracle.
While waiting for her flight, she briefly meets Teddy (Devale Ellis) at the buffet table. After a quick exchange, they part ways.
Soon, what seems like a Christmas miracle arrives—not in the form of a flight but in the form of James (Kofi Siriboe), a tall, dark-skinned man also stuck at the airport.
Layla and James bond so well that it feels like a “meant-to-be” moment. Layla introduces James to Pentatonix, and they form an instant connection.
But James learns Layla isn’t single, leaving him with no choice but to suggest an idea: they won’t exchange contact details, but if they meet again at the Pentatonix concert next Christmas and they’re both single, they’ll know it’s fate.
A Year Later
A year flies by, and Christmas rolls around again. Layla and her boyfriend aren’t attending the Pentatonix concert this time but a different one. However, her plans take a turn when she catches her boyfriend cheating on her.
Heartbroken, Layla remembers James from the airport. But there’s a problem—she doesn’t have a ticket for the concert.
Layla and her friend Roxy (Tymika Tafari) search frantically for a ticket, but to no avail. Then Roxy remembers a site called Impromptu that can help.
Layla visits the service the next day and is assigned a concierge—who turns out to be none other than Teddy, the guy she met briefly at the airport.
The Quest for a Christmas Miracle
Teddy is determined to help Layla, not only because it’s his job but because he needs a good review to keep it. Together, they embark on a wild adventure to find a ticket.
From Layla getting scammed online to meeting a couple who promise a ticket in exchange for a limited-edition purse, nothing seems to work.
Teddy even reaches out to the Pentatonix management, updating them about Layla’s quest in hopes they’ll grant her a miracle. Along the way, Layla gets to know Teddy better and sees how sweet and charming he really is.
Finally, Teddy’s cousin informs them about a Christmas ball where the grand prize is a Pentatonix ticket. At the ball, Layla and Teddy give a spectacular lip-sync performance, even sharing a kiss on stage.
Despite the spark between them, they don’t win. Just when it seems all hope is lost, the Pentatonix management, touched by Layla’s story, offers her a ticket—on one condition: Teddy must play Santa at the concert.
As Layla prepares for the event, she realises her feelings for Teddy. At the concert, she bumps into James and apologises, confessing she’s fallen for someone else.
To our surprise, we find out that James is in a relationship and is there with his partner.Teddy confesses his love for Layla at the concert, and their happily-ever-after begins.
Why You Should Watch Meet Me Next Christmas
Meet Me Next Christmas is made for the die-hard romantics—the kind who dream of love stories straight out of a book.
The film keeps us guessing: Team Teddy or Team Airport James? Just when you think it’s about Layla and James, the narrative shifts, showing us that love can arrive in the most unexpected ways.
We love how seamlessly the movie title blended in smoothly with the story. While it initially seems to refer to James, it ultimately shifts back to Teddy and Layla’s brief yet meaningful encounter a year prior.
The film also reminds us that the best way to spend the holiday is with the people you love and cherish. A movie date or a music concert is the perfect idea, but if they are far away check out this helpful guide on ways to celebrate Christmas with your loved ones when you are miles away.
