The 20th edition of the Mike Okonkwo National Essay Competition has officially kicked off, and secondary school students in Nigeria are invited to participate.
The competition, which started on Monday, March 17, 2025, will run until Friday, June 20, 2025. This year’s theme is “The Nigeria of Our Dreams: Today’s Reality and a Responsible Pathfinder”.
To participate, students must submit an essay of no more than 1,200 words, along with their personal details, school information, and principal’s contact number.
The essay should be in Word document format and emailed to essay@trem.org. The competition is part of Dr. Mike Okonkwo’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, aimed at promoting critical thinking and analytical skills in students.
This year’s competition is special, as it marks the 20th edition and coincides with Dr. Mike Okonkwo’s 80th birthday celebration. The Presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM) is committed to nation-building and has established the Mike Okonkwo Annual Lecture to address key national challenges.
The competition offers exciting prizes, including a cash prize of ₦1,000,000, a laptop, and a plaque for the first prize winner. The winning student’s school will also receive a desktop computer and a trophy. The first and second runners-up will receive similar prizes, with their schools also receiving desktop computers.
The Mike Okonkwo Essay Competition has become a platform for influencing government policy and promoting education in Nigeria. It is a testament to Dr. Mike Okonkwo’s commitment to empowering young minds and shaping the future of Nigeria.
