The National Institute of Construction Technology and Management (NICTM), Uromi, has emerged as the winner of the maiden edition of the inter-school quiz competition organized by the Edo axis Joint Campus Council (JCC) of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Edo State Axis.
The competition, which was held at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, featured participating institutions showcasing their knowledge and academic depth on the topic, “Safe Campus for Students: Combating Physical and Digital Threats.” After a closely contested competition that ended in a tie between NICTM and the University of Benin (UNIBEN), a tie-breaker round was invoked to determine the ultimate winner.
NICTM emerged victorious, earning a grand prize of ₦300,000, while UNIBEN took second place with a prize of ₦200,000. Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, came third, receiving ₦100,000.
The event featured notable speakers, including Acting Zonal Director of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Effa Okim, who urged students to harness digital platforms for positive purposes, such as knowledge, entrepreneurship, and influence.
Okim emphasized that the internet is a powerful tool that can be used to build and enlighten, rather than engage in crime or deceit.
Other dignitaries in attendance included Senior Special Assistant to Governor Monday Okpebholo on Student Matters, Comrade Jimah Mubarak, who reaffirmed the government’s commitment to securing educational spaces in the state. Mubarak highlighted the governor’s SHINE agenda, which prioritizes youth empowerment, education, and security.
The Edo State Chairman of NANS JCC, Comrade Ojumoola Miracle, noted that intellectual excellence has become the new standard for student protest, emphasizing that the quiz competition aimed to celebrate and reward academic excellence, critical thinking, and constructive engagement among Nigerian students.
The event sought to foster a culture of scholarship and collaboration among students, ultimately elevating the standard of student unionism in Edo State.
