The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The announcement comes as part of the ongoing seven-day national mourning declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, following Buhari’s passing. The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government after receiving presidential approval.
According to the Minister, the holiday is meant to recognize the former president’s service to the nation, his contributions to democratic governance, and his lasting impact on Nigeria’s development.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to unity and progress,” said Dr. Tunji-Ojo. “This public holiday offers all Nigerians a moment to reflect on his leadership and the values he stood for.”
He called on citizens to observe the day by promoting peace, patriotism, and national unity—principles the late president strongly advocated.
As part of the mourning observance, national flags are to be flown at half-mast from Sunday, July 13, for seven days.
The government also extended its condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and Nigerians at large, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
