Lagos State will host Africa’s first E1 Electric Powerboat Championship from October 4 to October 5 on the waters of Victoria Island. The city was chosen after a competitive global bid, a decision E1 CEO Rodi Basso says underscores Lagos’s growing profile as a center for innovation, tourism, and marine transport.
Basso noted that E1 aims to reshape the future of water mobility. “E1 is not just about racing; it’s about transforming the future of water mobility,” he said, adding that the championship demonstrates how electric-powered boats can advance sustainability, reduce environmental impact, and create new opportunities for global cities like Lagos.
As the world’s only all-electric powerboat series, E1 has already held events in Monaco, Venice, and Jeddah. The Lagos stop marks a significant step in expanding its mission to promote clean energy, climate action, and cutting-edge marine technology across new frontiers.
Working with the Lagos State Government, organizers say the event is designed to leave a lasting legacy by attracting investment in sports and entertainment while strengthening Lagos’s reputation for green innovation.
Chairman of the Local Organising Committee and Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Sam Egube, emphasized that the championship is “more than sport”—it is a platform to showcase Lagos’s culture, energy, and economic potential.
“For Lagos, the City of Aquatic Splendour, this is proof of capacity,” he said. “It aligns with our vision to join international conversations on clean energy and innovation while delivering a thrilling global sports spectacle.”
