The national electricity grid has suffered another collapse. Generation plunged from 2,917.83 megawatts to just 1.5 megawatts between 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, indicating a near-total system failure within that one-hour window.
Shortly after the incident, the Nigeria National Grid X handle, which regularly shares updates on electricity supply, noted that system restoration was underway. The update signaled that operators had begun recovery efforts even as large portions of the country experienced outages.
A subsequent post provided a snapshot of distribution company (DisCo) loads at 11:54 a.m. on September 10, 2025. It showed that every DisCo apart from Ibadan was at zero megawatts. Ibadan DisCo retained a minimal allocation of 20 MW, bringing the total recorded load nationwide at that time to just 20 MW—evidence of how widespread the interruption was across the network.
For context, “DisCo load” refers to the amount of power, measured in megawatts, assigned from the national grid to each Electricity Distribution Company. When a DisCo’s allocation drops to zero, customers in that franchise area typically experience a complete outage because there is no bulk supply to distribute to homes and businesses.
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) also issued a notice on its official X handle, informing customers that the power outage began at 11:23 hours due to a loss of supply from the national grid.
The utility explained that the disruption affected all its franchise areas and added that it was working with relevant stakeholders to restore service once grid stability is achieved. AEDC thanked customers for their patience and understanding while recovery efforts continue.
