Educational Updates in July
JAMB Reduces Minimum Admission Age to 16 Years – 8th July
JAMB in agreement with the Federal Government has lowered the minimum age for admission into tertiary institutions from 18 to 16 years. This change is effective from the 2025/2026 academic session. Its aim is to align Nigeria’s entry age with international standards.
Tuition-Free PGDE Programme for Technical & Vocational Teachers – 7th July
The Federal Ministry of Education launched a tuition-free one-year Post-Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) programme to strengthen the quality of technical education. This initiative targets teachers of technical and vocational subjects. It aims to help them gain professional teaching qualifications and boost classroom delivery.
Introduction of National Policy on Non-State Schools – 16th July
The Ministry equally introduced the National policy on Non-State Schools. This comprehensive structure is to regulate and standardize the operations of private, faith-based, community and home-schooling institutions. The policy sets a yardstick for infrastructure quality, teacher competence, curriculum implementation, learner protection and institutional accountability.
In a nutshell this policy is to ensure that all learners, whether in public or private environments, get education that meets national quality standards.
Governors Promise Support to Solve Education Deficits – 31st July
The Nigeria Governor’s Forum (NFF) reconfirmed its commitment to collaborate with the Federal Government in addressing Nigeria’s deep-rooted education crisis. The forum expressed concern that only 27% of Primary 3 pupils possess grade-level reading abilities. Also, the system faces a shortage of more than 200,000 qualified teachers.
As a result, Governors have pledged to prioritize teacher recruitment, retraining and sponsoring primary education in their respective states.
National Commitment to Enroll 10 Million Out-of-School Children – 26th July
The ministry outlined one of Nigeria’s most pressing educational challenges. With an outlined ambitious plan to bring at least 10 million out-of-school children back into classrooms, this initiative targets children in underserved rural and conflict-affected areas.
It aims to use community outreach, conditional incentives and flexible learning programmes to achieve this goal. The Ministry also emphasised that achieving this goal will require strong inter-agency partnership and sustained funding.
Other Major Achievements Across All Areas – 30th July
During an high-level interactive session the Ministry listed major milestones achieved in the education sector. Some of which are as follows.

- Establishment of Smart Schools equipped with digital learning tools

The ELPAF Campaign – 1st August
Nigeria joined the African Union’s initiative “Ending Learning Poverty for All in Africa” (ELPAF). Therefore, launching the national campaign on August 1, 2025. The programme targets the alarming rate of children who attended school but lack foundational literacy and numeracy.
The Ministry of Education described learning poverty as a major threat to human capital development across Africa. So, through ELPAF, Nigeria aims to strengthen foundational education, support teacher training and scale proven interventions. The goal here is to ensure that every child can read and understand by age 10.
Nigeria Teen Wins Global English Competition – 4th August
Nigeria celebrated a major academic milestone when 17-year-old Nafisa Aminu from Yobe state emerged as the world’s best in English Language Skills at the 2025 TeenEagle Global Finals in London.
The Federal Ministry of Education praised her achievement, describing it as a reflection of the potential within Nigeria’s youth. Her victory brought national attention to the importance of investing in language education, literacy programmes and global academic competitions that encourage excellence among students.
Suspension of New Federal Tertiary Institutions – 13th August
The Federal government announced a seven-year ban on the establishment of new Federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education. The policy is intended to reduce the rise of underfunded institutions and enable the government to consolidate resources for existing ones.
The Minister of Education stated that many institutions struggle with infrastructure, staffing and funding. Therefore, making expansion sustainable. Jamb also directed all federal universities to conclude 2025 admissions by October, while other tertiary institutions must finish by December.
Shutdown of Illegal Colleges of Education – 25th August
The National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) intensified its regulatory enforcement by shutting down 22 illegal Colleges operating without government approval on August 25, 2025. These institutions were accused of issuing unrecognized certificates and undermining teacher training standards.
This crackdown is part of a wider attempt to eliminate certificate mills and restore integration to Nigeria’s teacher education system. Also, authorities warned that graduates of such institutions risk invalid qualifications. Thus, urging students to verify accreditation before enrollment.
New National Curriculum – 31st August
The Federal Government introduced a revised curriculum for primary, secondary and technical schools. This change aims to minimise excessive subject loads, simplify learning and align our education with global standards. Major changes include:
- Better learning path
- Improved integration of digital literacy
- Simplified subjects across all levels
This curriculum was developed with input from NERDC, UBEC, NBTE and other stakeholders. It is expected to boost learning outcomes and make Nigerian education more relevant for the future. Alongside, monitoring mechanisms were announced to ensure smooth implementation nationwide.

The former military Head of State and two-term civilian President, Muhammadu Buhari, died on Sunday, in a London hospital.
Late President Buhari aged 82, first came to power in 1983 through a military coup and later returned as a democratically elected president in 2015 which makes him one of only two Nigerians alongside Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, to have led the nation both as a military ruler and as a civilian president. His actions drew attention both at home and abroad, earning him a reputation as a leader who valued honesty and accountability
As Nigeria mourns his death, many remember Buhari as a man of discipline and strong will. Though his dream of a better Nigeria was not fully achieved, his influence on the nation’s politics and values will not be forgotten. His passing reminds the country that the work of building a fair and honest nation must continue so as to make a difference.
Nigeria’s Food Inflation Drops to 22.74% in July 2025 – NBS
After years of battling rising food costs, has Nigeria finally begun to win the fight against soaring food prices? Nigeria’s headline inflation rate declined for the fourth straight month in July 2025, sliding to 21.88 per cent from 22.22 per cent in June, according to figures from the National Bureau of Statistics. After months of steep increases in food prices, the figure offers a small but important sign of relief for millions of Nigerians struggling to afford daily meals.

Google’s $37m Commitment to Africa
Google announced $ 37 million cumulative contribution to advance AI research and skills across Africa. This includes opening an AI community center in Accra, supporting the Masakhane African Languages AI Hub with $ 3 million to expand research across 40 + African Languages and launching a catalytic fund initiative to help over 100 AI driver startups.
Green Tech Suitability and Digital Inclusion
In Nigeria, driven by a mix of government initiatives, private sector investment and a young, tech- savvy population. The adoption of green technology, particularly solar energy, was described as more than a mere trend but a transformative movement due to erratic power supply, rising fuel costs and environmental awareness.
The National Information Technology Development Agency ( N I T D A) and the ministry of youth development have both reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the digital economy through Green technology and innovation, considering it central to Nigeria’s future development. Government priority expanding digital and financial inclusion through digital identity system, agent, banking and mobile money platform was a key priority for the federal government under the renewed hope agenda.

Akwa Ibom Tech Week 2025 (AKTW2025) – 27th August
This six-day tech gathering in Uyo organised by the Ibom Innovation Network is meant to drive innovation, investment, and digital transformation in Akwa Ibom state.
The theme, Catalyzing Digital Transformation for Innovation, Investment, and Impact, emphasizes the state’s ambition of becoming Africa’s new tech destination in Akwa Ibom and beyond.
It reflects regional decentralization of the tech ecosystem not just Lagos or Abuja, but other states (like Akwa Ibom) are pushing for digital transformation leadership.
Startups Funding Slowdown in August (monthly funding report)
In August, 33 African startups raised $93 million, a sharp drop from July’s totals. Nigeria led several of these investments for example, Koolboks (a Nigerian solar-powered cooling startup) raised $11 million. [3] [4]
Fintech Funding Leadership by Nigeria – 6th August 2025
The Nigerian fintechs (among four African startups) raised a huge part of the continent’s investment in H1 2025 totaling $640 million. All matters because this marks continued dominance of Nigeria in Africa’s fintech scene, reinforcing its role as a key fintech hub and its capacity to attract large-scale investment in digital payments and financial inclusion.

Cybercrime Crackdown – 21st August (operation launched)
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Nigeria deported 50 Chinese nationals and 1 Tunisian convicted of cybercrime. The operation targeted foreign led cybercrime networks and on 21st of August, twenty one (21) of the accused have been convicted and sentenced by the competent court of jurisdiction, with the police working closely with the Ministry of Justice to ensure full accountability.
This reflects increasing regulatory & enforcement concern around cybercrime. A stronger crackdown could influence Nigeria’s tech reputation, especially in security and trust for both local and global tech actors.
Assistive AI / Disability Tech Research – 25th August
Researchers in Nigeria developed a neural network model (AI) to help visually impaired people distinguish different denominations of Nigerian currency.
This is a good example of social impact technology AI not just for business, but to improve daily life for people with disabilities, showing maturity in Nigeria’s tech research.

Nova Fashion Show – 5th And 6th July
This fashion event organised by the Singles Community of Harvesters International Christian Centre took place at Northgate Arena, in Lagos.
The entry free event was hosted by Christian fashion group HASK Style, and tagged NOVA FASHION SHOW 2025: A Celebration of Style, Purpose & Bold Identity. The show brings style, boldness, creativity and confidence, to the world of fashion. It showcases how an individual can be highly fashionable and decent all at once.
The event saw designers (both established, popular and upcoming) invited to showcase their work under the theme: “Clothed in Light”. The fashion show presented exciting activities such as runway presentations, networking/brand showcases, among others.
Uyo Fashion Week – 10th To 12th July
The Uyo Fashion Week (Season 4) took place at Ibom Hall in Uyo, Nigeria. The event, supported by the Akwa Ibom State government, was themed “The Renaissance” signifying a revival of creativity and fashion in the city.
It featured runway shows, workshops and a panel session, which showcase designers, foster innovation and establish Uyo as a global fashion hub. The event was a celebration of culture, identity and possibilities in the world of fashion. The event also saw the fusion between tradition, innovation and creativity.
It was stated that the convener, Lady Mae Edmonds, ended the event noting that the theme of the year’s edition: “The Renaissance,” is a reminder that fashion is not just what we wear, but what we stand for, and in Uyo, we stand tall.

The Nnewi Fashion Show & Award Night is an event organised by Ceejay Bold Global Entertainment in collaboration with Celina Charity Foundation and other partners.

Bandit Attack in Zamfara: Killings & Mass Abductions -18th July
Armed bandits attacked Kairu community in Zamfara State, killing at least six people and abducting more than 100 others, including women and children.
Boko Haram Attack in Borno State – 6th July
Boko Haram militants launched an attack in Malam Fatori community (Borno State), killing at least nine people and injuring four others.
Militant Attack in Sokoto (Lakurwa Insurgents) – 1st July
Militants identified with an extremist faction known as Lakurawa raided Kwallajiya village in Tangaza LGA, Sokoto State, killing an estimated 15 – 17 civilians and injuring others.

Sub-Saharan Africa Security Conference (SASCON 2025) convened in Lagos, a specialist summit bringing top security professionals, policymakers and regional experts together to address terrorism, insurgency, cyber threats, border control and infrastructure protection challenges.
Cybersecurity Threats Surge – July 2025
Nigeria recorded an average of 6,101 cyberattacks per week in July 2025, a significant increase vs. global and continental averages.
Abduction in Sabon Garin Damri, Zamfara State
A mass abduction occurred near Sabon Garin Damri, Zamfara State, in early August 2025, as reports noted that at least 45 women and children were abducted on the 4th of August, following an earlier incident on August 2, when about 70 people were abducted.
The incidents are part of a trend of escalating insecurity in the region in the month of August. The abduction occurred over several days, as people, including children were abducted from five neighboring villages and over 11 people killed by armed bandits.
These attacks highlight the ongoing security challenges in Zamfara State, where bandits have consistently targeted rural communities, looted villages, and kidnapped residents for ransom.
Arrest Of Militant Leaders – 16th August
Nigeria’s national security adviser announced the arrest of two leaders on the country’s most-wanted list. Their names are Mahmud Muhammad Usman, reportedly linked to Ansaru and Mahmud al-Nigeri, reported to be “Mahmuda.”
Authorities said the detentions followed an intelligence-led, multi-agency operation and that both men had been tied to a string of kidnappings, attacks and facilitation networks across north-central and north-western Nigeria.
The U.S. and other partners publicly commended the arrests as a significant counter-terrorism success.
Boat Mishap – 18th August
A boat reportedly carrying about 50 passengers en route to Goronyo market in Sokoto State capsized.
Emergency agencies confirmed that about 10 people were rescued and over 40 missing as search-and-rescue operations were mounted.
NEMA and local responders said the vessel was heavily overloaded and that strong currents from a nearby dam were hampering recovery efforts.
News reporters noted overloading and poor safety practices are recurring causes of such river tragedies in the region.
Mosque Attack / Mass Killings – 19th August
Gunmen attacked a mosque in Unguwan Mantau, Malumfashi LGA of Katsina State during dawn (Fajr) prayers.
It was reported that the raids on the mosque and nearby villages left at least 50 people dead and dozens abducted or burned in related attacks.
Local authorities and witnesses said assailants targeted worshippers while they prayed, while some reports described the assault as retaliatory after clashes between residents and armed groups days earlier.
State security officials deployed troops and police to the area as investigations and rescue/recovery efforts continued.
Airstrike That Destroyed A Notorious Bandit Stronghold – 23rd August
The Nigerian Air Force carried out a precision airstrike that destroyed a notorious bandit leader’s stronghold and rescued 76 kidnapped victims, including women and children, in Katsina State.
According to a statement by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasir Mu’azu, the operation targeted the hideout of bandit kingpin, Babaro and his gang, who were behind the recent deadly attack on Gidan Mantau in Malumfashi Local Government Area.
Security Report by Federal Government – 5th August
At a monthly Joint Security Press Briefing (JSPB), the National Orientation Agency (NOA), representing the Federal Government, reported major security successes.
The agency stated that there was recovery of ₦21 billion, neutralisation of 78 suspected terrorists, dismantling of arms-trafficking networks and many arrests.
As published in the Guardian Newspaper, during the same briefing, NOA Director-General, Lanre Issa-Onilu, said that tactical enforcement plus intelligence-led operations were at the core of the government’s strategy on disrupting Criminal Networks and Securing Communities.
He also urged citizens to provide intelligence, warning against spreading unverified alerts, noting that when timely information is provided to the appropriate body that will take action, kidnap syndicates and other criminals will fail.
Campaign for National Security Awareness – 13 August
The NOA (federal agency) said it has launched a nationwide campaign to cover flood mitigation, disaster preparedness and national security awareness across all 774 LGAs.
As part of that, NOA said it would use radio, TV, social media, and community events (town halls, mosques, markets), to sensitise the public about security and encourage cooperation with security agencies.
NNPC Ltd Donates 35 CNG Buses to Presidential Initiative on CNG – 7th July
The NNPC Ltd has handed over thirty-five (35) hybrid Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses to the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG).
During a brief ceremony held at the NNPC Towers on Monday, the Group CEO, NNPC Ltd, Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari reiterated the Company’s commitment to support the Federal Government’s gas aspirations.
The GCEO, who stated that the move was in line with NNPC Ltd.’s efforts to drive the adoption of CNG as a cleaner, cheaper and sustainable fuel alternative, added that the Company has recorded significant progress on gas supply, infrastructure, distribution and retail outlets.
The Minister described the initiative as a direct reflection of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, a bold step to reduce the cost of transportation, lessen dependence on petrol, and ensure the utilisation of the Nation’s abundant natural gas resources for the benefit of the people.
135 road projects completed across Northern Nigeria – 30th July
The Minister of Transport, Sai’du Alkali, said the Federal Government has completed about 135 road projects across the Northern Region to boost the transportation of goods, persons, and the economy of the region.
Disclosed during Mr Alkali’s presentation on infrastructure at the two-day interactive session on Government-citizens’ Engagement on Wednesday in Kaduna, organized by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Foundation. The minister said 216 additional road construction projects are currently ongoing in the region.
Mr Alkali says the Federal Government has secured financing for the Aba to Maiduguri corridor, cutting across Borno, Yobe, Gombe, Bauchi, Plateau, Kaduna, Nasarawa, and Benue.
Also, about 312 road maintenance projects have been completed, while 50 others are in progress. Moreso, several legacy projects cutting across many states are underway, including the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway, Lagos, Calabar Coastal Highway, Calabar Abuja Superhighway, and the Akwanga, Jos, Bauchi, Gombe Road.
In the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), 14 road projects have been completed and inaugurated.
Other completed projects include the Greater Abuja Water Supply Network Project, the construction or rehabilitation of numerous primary and secondary schools, and the commissioning of three world-class bus terminals.
“It is worthy to also note that President Bola Tinubu has approved the construction of a mega bus terminal in each geopolitical zone of the country,” Alkali said.
The minister added that several other road construction, rehabilitation, and expansion works were ongoing across the country in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda
Minister Wike Commissions Relaunched Edo Line in Edo State – 22nd July
The Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesome Wike, visited Edo State to officially commission the Edo Line. After a period of dormancy, the state-owned transport company recently relaunched by Governor Monday Okpebholo is expected to boost intra and inter state transportation, while providing affordable and reliable travel options for residents.
The relaunch event featured the official unveiling of the updated vehicle fleet and demonstrations of the new ticketing system, positioning Edo Line as a vital component of Edo State’s development agenda.
Federal Executive Council Approves Draft National Land Transport Policy – 31st July
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) had approved the draft of the National Land Transport Policy, presented by the Minister of Transportation, Sen. Said Ahmed Alkali. The policy is the first of its kind in Nigeria’s transport sector since independence and aims to ensure a fast, safe, efficient, affordable, and integrated transport system.
The policy has 19 chapters, with implementation strategies outlined in chapters 18 and 19. Relevant federal ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs), states, and the private sector will be involved in implementing the policy.
This policy provides a legal framework for developing, coordinating, and administering the land transport system while enabling an environment for private sector investments and funding, leveraging global conventions, regional agreements, and protocols to enhance economic growth.
E-Call-Up System Enforcement Begins (Truck Traffic on Lekki-Epe Corridor) – 1st August
Lagos State commenced enforcement of the Electronic Call-Up System for trucks operating along the Lekki-Epe corridor, a major freight route linking the Lekki Deep Sea Port with inland supply chains.
The initiative followed stakeholder agreements on a ₦10,000 access fee and extensive preparation (including registering ~10,000 trucks) to ease congestion and reduce port traffic gridlock
Transport Leaders Conference – 27th – 29th August
Plateau State hosted a North Central Zonal Transport Conference in Jos. The event brought together government officials, industry players, and experts to discuss transforming transport infrastructure for economic growth.
Topics included improving connectivity, boosting trade, addressing regional mobility challenges (road, rail, air, and waterways), and identifying practical strategies for sustainable transport development.
Presidential Support for Transport Education – 17th August
President Bola Tinubu pledged support for the transport sector at the Federal University of Transportation, Daura, during its second matriculation ceremony.
