The Super Eagles entered a new era under French-Malian coach Éric Sékou Chelle, who took over after his appointment by the Nigeria Football Federation in January 2025.
The 48-year-old coach, who is widely respected for his structured defensive approach, has also managed other African teams like Mali and Algeria.
He became the first non-Nigerian African to lead Nigeria’s senior national side as the head coach.

Achievement of Éric Chelle with the Super Eagles
Under Chelle, the Super Eagles have shown remarkable improvement.
In just one year, Eric Chelle has left an Súper mark on the Super Eagles team. During the AFCON 2025, the Super Eagles’ improvement was clearly seen, restoring confidence to the team after a series of poor performances.
They had more defensive organisation, and played with more tactical discipline than they have in years. The team scored 14 goals and drew two. A feat that is yet to be achieved by a Nigerian team in AFCON history.
They won five consecutive matches and secured a bronze medal for finishing third. They also emerged as the highest-scoring team in the tournament.
His defensive structure helped reduce their conceded goals. This was all achieved under coach Chelle.
Super Eagles Defence Evolution
Before Éric Chelle’s arrival, the Super Eagles’ defense system was disorganised and inconsistent. It lacked a clear structure for good performance and depended on the individual player’s pace, duels, and tackles to thrive. This was a huge setback for the Super Eagles team.
The defense struggled with:
Tactical instability: Because they kept altering how they played, the player did not have a clear defensive identity. They alternated between a back four and a back five, which created confusion among the players in some instances, especially during fast attacks. It affected teamwork and general team performance.
Disorganisation: The team had relied on individual speed recovery because of poor positioning. The backline often had very little protection making it very easy for opponents to attack.
Lack of cohesion: Because of poor positioning, most times, the defence lines became too wide. When this happens, to cover up, defenders would be forced to deviate to tackles instead of defending which is their primary duty.
Reactive defence: Instead of proper positioning, the team often played according to the opposition’s movement. It was as though opponents determined the tempo of the game and they responded.
Midfielders could go to chase the ball, creating space, and defenders would step out to close up the gap; the opponents would see the opportunity to attack.
With Chelle, the team got to determine where the attack happened instead of reacting to the attack. They determined the tempo of the match.

Chelle’s Transitional Tactics
Éric Chelle has been able to coach the team and bring back stability to the once-inconsistent team. He introduced structural protection for the defense and attacking system so they do not have to rely on individual speed and talent, though these are very necessary.
His formation style of 4-4-2, which was flexible and could shift to 4-3-3, was a major factor in the Super Eagles’ re-emergence and great performance.
By using this diamond formation, he established dominance in the midfield. This formation also made it easier for skilled players to detect the tempo of the match and switch easily. His approach emphasized patience and correct pace.
One of his greatest achievements was the strengthening of the defense team. This has improved the overall performance of the team, especially those in the backline, and also exposed the weaknesses of the opposing team, as seen very clearly in the 2025 AFCON.
Unlike the traditional formation which hindered easy transition, Chelle’s diamond formation aided easy transition between attack and defense. This enabled adaptability that flowed with the game.
Rather than constant pressing, he introduced conditioned pressing where players only pressed on triggers and returned to assigned positions immediately.
This helped reduce defence fatigue. His formation closed up unnecessary spaces and encouraged compactness during transition, which made it difficult for opponents to attack.
The arrival of Chelle marked a historic moment for the Super Eagles’ defensive system and tactical structure.
Hopefully, he can further establish the Super Eagles as a formidable team whose performance transcends to world-class.
