Should AI Replace Human Workers?

Edited by Elizabeth Aloho Esiekpe and Jennifer Demian

What if, instead of just helping, AI started doing everything on its own? Would we still need humans working in their roles? This raises an interesting question, ‘Should AI replace human workers’?

AI (Artificial Intelligence) is when machines or computers are designed to think and learn like humans to solve problems, or even make decisions without being told exactly what to do.

The ability of a computer or a robot under computer control to carry out operations that are typically associated with human intellectual processes, such reasoning, is known as artificial intelligence.

Examples Of AI In Our Everyday Lives

  • Siri or Google Assistant: which helps you answer your questions.
  • Chatbots on websites: which help you with customer service.
  • Recommendation systems: like Netflix that suggest movies for you based on what you frequently watch.

AI In The Workplace

Artificial Intelligence is used in many industries to make work easier and faster. It improves your efficiency by doing repetitive tasks (like sorting items) and analysing large amounts of data quickly, so you can focus on more important work.

Some of the workplaces where Artificial Intelligence is used include:

  • Manufacturing industries: where robots assemble your products on factory lines.
  • Customer Service: where chatbots help you answer common questions online.
  • Healthcare: where it helps you diagnose diseases by analysing medical images.

Advantages & Challenges Of AI In Jobs

  1. Time-saving & Productivity: works faster which helps businesses get done in less time.
  2. Handling dangerous or boring tasks: takes on risky jobs, letting you focus on creative and strategic tasks.
  3. Solving complex problems: analyses large amounts of information and help you to find solutions to tough problems faster.

Although Artificial Intelligence can replace jobs that involve routine tasks, it can’t replace human creativity, emotional intelligence, or the ability to make complex decisions These are the qualities that make us, humans, unique.

Artificial Intelligence is best used as a tool to assist and not to fully replace. Adapt by learning new skills like digital literacy and how to manage or work with these tools, and make yourself more valuable in an AI-driven world.

Should AI Replace Humans?

One can agree with this argument because Artificial Intelligence can work faster, more accurately, and doesn’t get tired. This makes it ideal for certain roles like data processing because you value your time and efficiency at your workplace.

On the other hand, you can disagree with the argument because artificial intelligence lacks human creativity, empathy, and judgment.

Most people believe AI should work alongside them to help and not to replace them because we bring unique skills that it lacks.

You need to keep learning new skills to stay relevant as artificial intelligence tools continue to evolve and emerge, like understanding technology and improving problem-solving abilities.

You should also focus on skills artificial intelligence can’t replace, such as problem-solving, adaptability, tech knowledge, and creativity, so you can succeed in an AI-driven world.

Conclusion

AI and humans work best together. You should see it as a tool that’ll help you grow and improve, not something to fear. You can unlock more opportunities and succeed in the future by maintaining the balance of learning to work with artificial intelligence systems.
