You Don’t Need Fancy Gear To Start Sports

Edited by Paul Elegbeleye

Many people think they need to have so much money before they can think of going into sports; you know the drills, the matching kit, the expensive and trendy sneakers.

It always feels like you’re not ready unless you obtained the right material…but honestly that’s not true… what you really need is the drive to start.

One big myths people believe is that your gear determines how effective you’ll be. Look, having the skilled gear set can help, sure… but it’s not what makes one a skilled athlete. I’ll tell you for free that showing up and putting in the work matters way more than whether your sneakers is trendy.

Do you really need a fancy gear?

If you think about how many of athletes started, you’ll see it’s usually with very little to nothing. In places around the world, kids play football with balls that’d seen better days and goal posts made out of rocks or blocks. They’re not waiting for the perfect boots, that’s unimaginable at the time, they’re just playing… and that’s what counts. Getting out there and doing it again and again.

Starting with what you have? It’s totally fine.  Want to play football?  Grab a ball and find an open space. Thinking about running? A comfortable pair of shoes will do just fine, no need for a fancy track watch or a gear out right away.

Obsessing over having the best equipment can hold you back. I’ve seen people delay starting for months all because they can’t get over having a particular brand like that of the celebrities…meanwhile they could have already been out there learning, failing and getting better. They end up stuck in their imaginations and make excuses.

Here’s something I really believe in, sports is all about growth, not just looking the part. Do you really need to look like a Pro before you even start? What matters is that you’re trying, you’re showing up, and you’re willing to learn.

Now don’t get me wrong, there would always come a time when upgrading your gear is needed. Maybe after playing for a while, you’re getting serious and perfect, you start to understand what you really need, that’s when investing in better equipment comes in. This helps you in taking the next step. Just know It should never be what that stops you from starting in the first place.

So yeah, you don’t need expensive and trendy gears to start sports. What you really need is to take the first step, stay consistent and focus on getting better each time. Don’t wait until you have all you’ve imagined, start small and grow from there.
