Who would have known that Maktown Flyers from Makurdi would be the team carrying Nigeria’s flag into the 2026 Basketball Africa League (BAL)? This is a team with a few years of professional existence.

What is special about this Nigerian debutant team?
Maktown Flyers represent a new design for Nigerian basketball players. The team integrates academy talent with seasoned professionals.
In just one year, this team from Makurdi has gone from a newbie in the Nigerian Premier Basketball League to being the nation’s sole representative on the continent’s biggest stage: BAL 2026.
A feat attained a few months after they defeated the Rivers Hoopers to emerge winners in the Nigerian Premier League. Maktown Flyers dominated the 2025 season.
When Maktown Flyers won the Nigerian Premier League championship, it secured them a direct spot in the 2026 BAL group stage. According to the Sun, these players from Nigeria will be joining four other first-time qualifiers from Tanzania, South Africa, Tunisia, and the Ivory Coast.
In a few weeks the players will head to Rabat, Morocco, for the Sahara conference. The Rabat leg is scheduled from April 24 to May 3rd.
One question: will they come home with the trophy?
According to Sahara Reporters, the Maktown Flyers will face stiff competition at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex against some of Africa’s top basketball clubs.
Their opponents include:
- JCA Kings (Côte d’Ivoire) – Saturday, April 25, at 3:00 PM.
- FUS Rabat (Morocco) – Sunday, April 26, at 6:00 PM.
- Al Ahly (Egypt) – Wednesday, April 29, at 4:00 PM.
- Club African (Tunisia) – Friday, May 1 at 3:00 PM.
- ASC Ville de Dakar (Senegal) – Sunday, May 3, at 3:00 PM.

According to former NBA star Olumide Oyedeji, “BAL is a unique and highly demanding competition”. He also said that it is a game where the Flyers must “leave their skin on the court”. He’s right.
Our national representatives will be meeting and competing with other African basketball elite classes like Al Ahly of Egypt and ASC Ville de Dakar of Senegal. However, it is not just about talent; it is about tactical discipline and physical grit.
Points to think of
We cannot deny that our representatives are new to the game. Our team has a few years of industrial know-how. Therefore, one question lingers: can our players contend against these established powerhouses and win?
Will these players beat these other teams with many years of professional expertise?
While Maktown Flyers emerged from an academy developed about three years ago, Al Ahly has over a century of experience in professional and continental competitions.
Similarly, Fus Rabat has about 80 years of similar history. However, unlike many of their rivals who needed years before they could secure an international spot, the Flyers secured their 2026 BAL debut immediately after their first professional season.
What chances do they have at winning?
Historically, BAL has been led and dominated by elite clubs like Petro de Luanda of Angola and Egypt’s Al Ahly, however, if our stars enter the game with the same energy used so far, they could stand a chance.
Also, their lack of continental experience is an advantage. Currently, our players stand as an unknown force.
Our team’s strengths and weaknesses are yet to be deciphered by more tactical and established teams. This is a very good point the squad could convert to an advantage, as they can easily confuse the opponents.
According to the Sun, “The Rabat leg will take place from April 24 to May 3 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex. This is Maktown’s opportunity to shine on the international stage and secure their ticket to Kigali.”
