The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has celebrated the success of its latest Artemis mission , tagged Artemis II (indicating the second time NASA is launching spaceship to the moon), which lifted off on Wednesday, 1st of April, 2026 from Kennedy Space Center, carrying four astronauts on a historic 10-day trip around the Moon.
The spaceship successfully arrived on Friday, 10th of April, 2026, marking another astronomical history of mankind.
It was reported that it took the crew four days to reach the moon, while taking a flyby tour of about 6-7hours and returned on the 10th of April, 2026.
It was gathered that the crewed test flight of the Orion spacecraft, the first with astronauts on Artemis, aimed to validate systems for deep‑space exploration, gather science observations at lunar distance and pave the way for future Moon landings.
Officials said splashdown occurred in the Pacific Ocean off San Diego at 8:07 PM EDT on the 10th of April, 2026.
Reports have it that Artemis II mission began with a thunderous liftoff of NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket.
It was noted that at 6:35 p.m. EDT on the 1st of April 2026, the SLS sent Orion skyward from Pad 39B.
Research indicates that this was “the first time astronauts are traveling towards the Moon in over 50 years (with Neil Amstrong becoming the first man to walk on the moon)”, a milestone underscored by both NASA and its partners.
It was reported that the four-astronaut crew had trained together for years and were cheered by leaders worldwide as they headed into deep space.
Europe’s space agency noted that this mission’s success “confirms Europe’s essential role in humankind’s return to the Moon,” thanks to the Orion service module, built by the European Space Agency.
Canadian officials celebrated Jeremy Hansen as Canada’s first astronaut on a lunar mission, calling it “a historic milestone” and “an achievement that fills the nation with pride.”
Reports has it that during the outbound transit to the Moon, the crew tested Orion’s systems and enjoyed spectacular sights.
It was further reported that from the capsule’s windows the four-man crew saw the blackness of deep space, distant planets and the Moon growing ahead.
Speaking, Jeremy Hansen, who said the view was a “powerful reminder that we all share this one planet,” added that seeing Earth “beyond the edge of the Moon” inspired awe and hope in him.
Flight Director, Rick Henflig later admitted that even his team’s veteran engineers felt the tension of reentry, noting that “if you didn’t have anxiety bringing the spacecraft home, you probably didn’t have a pulse.”
Report has it that during a seven-hour pass behind the Moon’s far side, the Artemis II crew captured stunning pictures and scientific data.
It was also gathered that one of them was an “Earthset” image, showing earth’s blue crescent sinking below the Moon’s horizon, echoing the famous Apollo 8 Earthrise shot.
NASA’s Earth Observatory notes that in the picture took on the 6th of April, “a partially lit crescent Earth drops behind the Moon” (white clouds over Oceania, night side to the west), while the Moon’s cratered surface shows rich detail.
Reports stated that the picture, the first of its kind from human eyes at the lunar far side, was hailed for highlighting Earth’s beauty and fragility.
In addition, it was also reported that Orion’s cameras recorded a total solar eclipse from space, as the Moon entirely covered the Sun.
NASA reported that this view lasted “nearly 54 minutes of totality,” with a glowing halo seen around the dark lunar disk and distant stars suddenly coming into view.
Astronomers on Earth praised the images: seeing the Sun’s corona and zodiacal light without atmospheric glare, offered new scientific insights.
Beyond photography, it was reported that the crew and mission scientists performed experiments in radiation monitoring, life support testing and navigation.
Gathered was also that the mission scientists also ran Orion’s manual-piloting drills, checked the spacecraft’s environmental systems and even conducted a space-based navigation exercise simulating docking.
It was reported that every data point will inform the design of Artemis III and beyond (indicating a reported future plan of landing on the moon itself).
Importantly, reports said the flight proved that Orion’s hardware, from oxygen recyclers to solar panels, everything worked as intended in deep space.
“The path to the lunar surface is open,” NASA Associate Administrator Amit Kshatriya remarked at the post-splashdown briefing, adding that “the work ahead is greater than the work behind us… 53 years ago, humanity left the moon. This time we return to stay.”
After the lunar swingby, it was reported that Orion naturally fell back toward Earth under gravity.
On the 7th April, it was reported that the crew executed a course-correction burn to fine-tune their trajectory.
By Flight Day 9, it was gathered that the spacecraft had exited the Moon’s gravitational sphere and was on final approach.
Ground teams at NASA’s Johnson Space Center and partners in the U-S military stood ready for the endgame.
On the 10th of April, Orion reportedly jettisoned its service module and plunged into Earth’s atmosphere.
Reports stated that the capsule housing the astronauts encountered temperatures over 3,000 °F, as it re-entered at 35 times the speed of sound.
Reports also noted that at around 22,000 feet altitude, the drogue parachutes deployed, stabilising the craft, then the three main chutes slowed Orion to a gentle splashdown speed.
At 8:07 p.m. EDT on the 10th of April, Orion’s command module Integrity reportedly made a smooth splashdown in the Pacific Ocean off San Diego.
It was reported that the U-S Navy and Air Force teams immediately moved in.
It was also gathered that recovery platforms were secured around Orion and divers assisted the crew out of the capsule, as all four astronauts emerged smiling and appeared in good health.
On the recovery ship, NASA Administrator, Jared Isaacman (his first mission as agency head) said he was “proud of the entire workforce” whose years of effort enabled the flight.
Canadian Industry Minister, Mélanie Joly lauded the mission as “making history” for Canada, noting that astronauts like Hansen inspire the next generation.
European Space Administrator (ESA), Director-General Josef Aschbacher said Artemis II “confirms Europe’s essential role in humankind’s return to the Moon” and that working “shoulder to shoulder” is the best way forward.
Reports have it that Artemis II’s success clears the path for Artemis III (the first crewed lunar landing mission) and eventual Mars missions.
As NASA’s Amit Kshatriya put it, the agency’s goal is not to “plant flags and leave, but to stay,” building a sustained presence in space.
