From Curiosity to Copywriting: My Journey as a Beginner Writer

Edited By Nna Rejoice and Oluwaseun Bose Rufus

From researching copywriting out of curiosity to building a career through writing: this is my story.

My Introduction To Copywriting

Have you ever stumbled upon something online that completely changed the direction of your life?

A few years ago, I would have laughed if someone told me that writing would become an important part of my life. At the time, I was simply exploring opportunities online when I came across the concept of copywriting. Naturally, my curiosity was sparked.

Instead of scrolling past it, I decided to learn more. As I researched the field, I discovered that copywriting involved much more than writing attractive sentences.

Rather, it was about understanding people, communicating effectively, and influencing decisions through words.

Although I was fascinated by what I learned, I had no concrete plan to pursue it. In fact, it remained nothing more than an interesting discovery until an unexpected conversation changed everything.

My roommate, who works in tech, often noticed my interest in writing and research. One day, she suggested that I explore copywriting more seriously.

According to her, the skills I already possessed could help me thrive in the field while creating opportunities for financial independence. Looking back, that conversation became a turning point.

Soon afterwards, she introduced me to Dominate With Copywriting (DWC), a training program designed to teach aspiring writers the fundamentals of copywriting. Determined to give it a chance, I invested ₦5,000 in the program and began my learning journey.

Over the following months, I gained valuable knowledge in:

1. Audience research

2. Persuasive writing

3. Content creation

4. Marketing communication

5. Writing techniques for different platforms

Eventually, I completed the training and earned my certificate. While that achievement felt rewarding, I quickly realised that certification was only the beginning.

The real work started when it was time to apply what I had learned.

What I’m Learning as a Beginner

Since completing my training, my understanding of writing has evolved significantly.

Initially, I believed good writing was simply about using impressive words. However, experience has taught me that effective writing is about clarity, purpose, and value.

Along the way, I have learned that:

1. Understanding your audience is essential.

2. Simplicity often communicates better than complexity.

3. Consistency matters more than occasional bursts of motivation.

4. Constructive feedback is one of the fastest ways to improve.

Most importantly, I have learned that growth happens through practice. Every article, draft, and revision contributes to becoming a better writer.

Challenges I’ve Faced Along the Way

Like many beginners, I encountered obstacles that tested my commitment.

For example, writer’s block became one of my biggest struggles. There were days when ideas flowed effortlessly and others when a blank page felt intimidating.

Additionally, balancing academics with skill development proved challenging. As a Physiotherapy student, managing coursework alongside writing required discipline and effective time management.

Nevertheless, those challenges taught me valuable lessons:

1. Discipline can carry you when motivation fades.

2. Progress requires patience.

3. Consistency produces results over time.

4. Every setback presents an opportunity to learn.

Because of these experiences, I developed a stronger work ethic and a deeper appreciation for the learning process.

Taking the Next Step

As my confidence grew, I began searching for opportunities to gain practical experience.

Consequently, I built my professional presence on LinkedIn, where I continue to connect with professionals and explore more prospects in writing and marketing.

More recently, I was selected as a Volunteer Web Content Writer for Geeky Nigeria. Although the position is unpaid, the experience and exposure have been invaluable.

Through this role, I have the platform to sharpen my writing skills, collaborate with other writers, and contribute meaningful content to readers.

In addition, I secured a role as a Marketing Growth Partner with  Flowmingo AI. While it may seem like a small achievement, I consider it another important milestone in my journey.

After all, every opportunity creates room for growth.

Why I’m Continuing This Journey

Despite the challenges, my enthusiasm for writing continues to grow. Beyond being a professional skill, writing has become a powerful tool for communication, creativity, and personal development.

Through writing, I can share ideas, educate others, and contribute value to different audiences.

Furthermore, each experience reinforces my belief that consistent effort eventually creates opportunities.

Whether through Geeky Nigeria, Flowmingo AI, or future projects, I intend to keep learning, improving, and expanding my capabilities as a writer.

Final Thoughts

Today, when I reflect on where this journey began, I am reminded of how a simple curiosity developed into something much bigger.

From researching copywriting online to earning a certificate, overcoming challenges, and securing writing opportunities, each step has contributed to my growth.

Without a doubt, there is still much to learn. Yet every achievement, no matter how small, serves as proof that progress is possible.

Therefore, if you’re considering learning a new skill, don’t wait until you have everything figured out.

Start where you are.

Learn as you go.

Stay consistent and trust the process.

After all, every expert was once a beginner, and every success story started with a single step.
