Political Participation in Concepts of Government

I. Introduction

• Introduction to the subtopics: political participation, communalism, and feudalism.

II. Political Participation

Political participation is the involvement of citizens in the decision-making process of government.

Types of Political Participation:

1. Voting
2. Campaigning
3. Protesting
4. Joining political parties
5. Advocacy

Importance of Political Participation:

1. Ensures accountability of government
2. Promotes democratic values
3. Enhances civic engagement
4. Promotes national cohesion and stability 
5. Ensures national development
6. Create political awareness

(The teacher will lead class discussion on political participation, including it types and importance)

III. Communalism

Communalism is a system of government where power is held by a community or group of people. For example, The People’s Republic of China (PRC)

Characteristics of Communalism:

1. Collective ownership of resources
2. Shared decision-making
3. Emphasis on community welfare

Implications of Communalism for Government:

1. Promotes social cohesion
2. Encourages collective responsibility
3. Can lead to conflict with individual rights

(The teacher will lead class discussion on communalism, its characteristics and implications)

IV. Feudalism

Feudalism is a system of government where power is held by a lord or noble, and citizens owe allegiance and service in exchange for protection. For example, Morocco, Bhutan, etc.

Characteristics of Feudalism:

1. Hierarchical structure
2. Obligations of loyalty and service
3. Limited social mobility

Relevance of Feudalism to Modern Government:

1. Influenced the development of modern systems of government
2. Highlights the importance of social hierarchy and power dynamics
3. Provides a contrast to modern democratic values

(The teacher will lead a class discussion on feudalism, its characteristics, and relevance to modern governments, especially in Nigeria)

EVALUATION: The teacher will ask students the following questions:

1. What is the meaning of political participation?
2. Explain the concept of communalism and its implications for government.
3. Describe the characteristics of feudalism and its relevance to modern government.
4. How does political participation promote democratic values?
5. What are the advantages and disadvantages of communalism as a system of government?

• Students will be evaluated through a short quiz at the end of the lesson.
• Participation in class discussions will also be assessed.

SUMMARY: Teacher will briefly review and revise the lesson and respond to questions, if any.

Final Thoughts: The teacher will guide students to copy and complete lesson notes where necessary, correct errors and mark complete notes.

1. Write a short essay on the importance of political participation in modern democracies.
