The phrase ‘the protective rock’ connotes a deeper meaning than what anyone can think of. This goes back to a particular Nigerian ancient story, which would be told below.
But before telling the story, let me ask you a question: Have you ever slept in any place other than a roofed building? Well, many might answer yes, because they have experienced camping and sleeping in tents.
Shelter is one of the three basic essentials that humans need. However, there are cases where even this basic need becomes impossible to get. In this light, this familiar tale comes to mind.
Once upon a time, in a land filled with rolling hills and dancing rivers. There was a magical mountain made of mounds of rocks, which reached up to the clouds. It stood tall and proud in the center of Abeokuta. Before the incident which made it popular, it was a hidden gem shielded by the forest.
Interestingly, this rock was not ordinary. It was wise, strong and full of secrets. The rock is called ‘Olumo Rock.’ The people of the land believed that Olumo Rock whispers to the wind and listens to the heartbeat of the earth. However, this was not the best part. It was great because this rock played a crucial role in the preservation of the people of Egba.
These people sought a safe place to live when chased by fierce warriors during the civil war. They were afraid and did not know where to hide. This all changed on a fateful day.
An old hunter named Adagba was walking through the forest. He followed a squirrel that leapt from tree to tree. Thus, leading him to a tall and steel rock that has never been seen before.
He thought to himself, “hmmm…this rock looks strong. “Maybe it can accommodate us.” To further prove this point, he climbed the rock and discovered something amazing.
Inside it were hidden caves and secret tunnels. What more? You could see the whole land below. This was quite a wonderful discovery. Simply because they could monitor their enemies from far away and be safe.
Upon this realisation, Adagba ran back to the village shouting, “Come, come! I have discovered a mighty rock that can protect us all!”
The people followed him carrying their children, baskets of food and drinks. On getting to the location, they gasped in awe. Many had their opinions about this sight.
“It is like a giant sleeping elephant!” one person shouted.
“It is the home of the spirits!” another whispered.
To their utmost surprise, this rock was not scarry but was actually kind to them. As the people climbed into its caves, they felt warm and safe just like a mother’s embrace. For many years, the Egba people hid their whenever danger came.
Amazingly, the rock never let them down. Even during the worst storms or battles, this rock stood firm like a strong warrior. As a result, the people named it “Olumo” meaning “God’s creation.”
Later on, many built their homes around it and made it the center of the city. They sang songs of the rock and danced around it during festivals.
Today, Olumo Rock has become a tourist attraction in Nigeria. The best part is that you can still climb it to the peak, to get a beautiful view of the city just like Adagba did. Also, you can see the secret caves, touch the ancient walls and feel the spirit of the rock that once protected a whole people from going extinct.
Maybe, just maybe Olumo Rock might tell you its next great secret, if you listen closely during your visit.
