WWE Friday Night SmackDown delivered a chaotic night in Toronto on August 21, 2026, with a major WWE Championship showdown, a shocking betrayal, championship drama and several developments that could reshape the blue brand in the weeks ahead.
The biggest story of the night unfolded in the main event, where CM Punk defended the Undisputed WWE Championship against Kevin Owens. What began as a highly anticipated battle between two of WWE’s biggest stars ended with Sami Zayn dramatically changing the course of the match.
Punk ultimately retained the championship, but the result turned out to be one overshadowed by Zayn’s stunning actions against both Owens and the champion.
Meanwhile, Blake Monroe attacked Giulia before their scheduled match could even begin, while Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton were placed under a strict no-contact stipulation ahead of their upcoming showdown. With the WWE Tag Team Championship also on the line, the August 21 episode of SmackDown had plenty for wrestling fans to talk about.

CM Punk survives Kevin Owens in brutal WWE Championship battle
The main event in Toronto was always expected to be one of the biggest attractions of the evening. CM Punk put the Undisputed WWE Championship on the line against Kevin Owens (KO), who had earned his title opportunity after returning to WWE and winning the No. 1 Contender’s Fatal 4-Way Match at SummerSlam. WWE had spent the preceding weeks building tension between Punk and Owens, thereby ensuring that their championship encounter happened to be one of the most anticipated matches on SmackDown.
The two wrestlers delivered the physical fight that most fans expected, with Owens repeatedly pushing the champion to his limits. In all of these, the match descended into chaos when the referee was taken out of the action. Owens appeared to have an opportunity to clinch his coveted win of the championship after hitting Punk with the Stunner, but there was no official available to make the three-count. Punk in similar fashion, also found himself unable to immediately capitalise after delivering his famous Go to Sleep.
Then came the moment that changed everything: Sami Zayn shocks Kevin Owens. Sami Zayn entered the match and initially appeared to be somewhat helping Kevin Owens but in a dramatic turn of events, the situation quickly turned against Owens. Zayn encouraged Owens to use the WWE Championship as a weapon, of which Owens refused to cross that line, and Zayn responded by striking Owens with the title belt.
That incidentally gave CM Punk the opening he needed, as he hit Owens with the Go to Sleep, allowing him to score the decisive pinfall and retain the Undisputed WWE Championship. Official results confirmed that Zayn’s interference ultimately cost Owens his opportunity to become champion.
Zayn was still not finished. After the match, Sami Zayn shocked the Toronto crowd again by attacking both CM Punk and Kevin Owens. WWE’s official SmackDown coverage described Zayn as viciously attacking the two competitors after costing Owens the championship.
WWE also released footage showing the Toronto crowd responding with loud chants directed at Zayn following the incident. The development leaves the WWE Championship picture considerably more complicated but still Punk remains champion, Owens has been denied the championship, and Zayn has now inserted himself directly into the situation.
Whether WWE turns the situation into a full-blown rivalry involving all three men remains to be seen, but Zayn’s actions have undoubtedly created one of the most intriguing storylines coming out of the latest episode of SmackDown.
Blake Monroe attacks Giulia before her SmackDown debut
Another major talking point came from the women’s division of which Blake Monroe was scheduled to make her SmackDown in-ring debut against Giulia, but wrestling fans never got to see the match. Instead, Monroe attacked Giulia before the bell.
WWE’s official video description specifically identifies the incident as Monroe attacking Giulia before her scheduled SmackDown debut match and thus, the attack meant that the advertised contest did not officially get underway. Monroe then delivered a vicious assault that left Giulia down in the ring.
This, we can say was an attention-grabbing way to introduce Monroe to the SmackDown audience, but it also leaves fans waiting to see when her official in-ring debut will actually take place. The attack also immediately establishes Giulia as an obvious rival for Monroe in coming times.
Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton receive a major warning
It is no news that the tension between Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton also continued to escalate as the two former allies have been heading towards a showdown at Sunday Night’s Main Event, and WWE officials were forced to intervene after their increasingly heated confrontations.
Nick Aldis made the stakes even higher when he declared that neither Rhodes nor Orton will receive another Undisputed WWE Championship opportunity if either man has physical contact with the other before their scheduled showdown.
This kind of creates an unusual situation for both competitors considering that Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton now have to remain apart despite their growing hostility, knowing that one physical confrontation could have major consequences for their future championship ambitions. The two men nevertheless continued their verbal battle, ensuring that their upcoming match remains one of the major attractions surrounding WWE’s current storylines.
The MFTs retain the WWE Tag Team Championship
The WWE Tag Team Championship was also defended in Toronto.
Tama Tonga and Talla Tonga, known as the MFTs and representing the Sons of Haku, put their titles on the line against former champions Damian Priest and R-Truth. The challengers were looking to regain the championships they had recently lost, while the MFTs entered their first title defence after capturing the belts in a Triple Threat Tag Team Match involving Priest and Truth and The Viking Raiders. WWE had also advertised Haku’s presence in support of Tama and Talla.
The champions survived the challenge and retained their WWE Tag Team Championship; meaning that the victory further strengthens the MFTs’ position in the tag-team division and gives the Sons of Haku another important win early in their title reign.
Lash Legend defeats Tiffany Stratton
The women’s division also featured a singles contest between Lash Legend and Tiffany Stratton. Legend emerged victorious, adding another significant result to the evening. The situation became even more chaotic after the match when the Irresistible Forces attacked Tiffany Stratton.
Chelsea Green subsequently came to Stratton’s aid, arriving with a kendo stick and helping drive off the attackers. WWE highlighted the confrontation among its official SmackDown clips from the evening. The segment adds another layer to the developing women’s division and keeps Chelsea Green, Tiffany Stratton and Lash Legend among the names worth watching.
Baron Corbin gives Lil Yachty a surprising challenge
One of the night’s more unusual developments involved United States Champion Baron Corbin, Trick Williams and rapper Lil Yachty. Trick Williams wanted another opportunity at Corbin’s United States Championship but the latter however, attached an unexpected condition to the possibility of another title match: Lil Yachty must first face Baron Corbin and survive for five minutes. If Yachty succeeds, Trick Williams earns another opportunity at Corbin’s United States Championship. The unusual challenge was officially highlighted by WWE following the show, making it one of the episode’s most unexpected moments.
Shinsuke Nakamura introduces Kyoki
SmackDown also saw Shinsuke Nakamura introduce Kyoki as his new tag-team partner. Kyoki is formerly known as Hiromu Takahashi, a major name familiar to fans of Japanese professional wrestling. The pairing immediately adds another interesting combination to WWE’s tag-team terrain, with Nakamura and Kyoki promising to make an impact together. WWE’s official SmackDown video archive featured the two men vowing to take over.
What comes next on WWE SmackDown?
The August 21 episode left WWE fans with several major questions.
Will Sami Zayn’s attack on CM Punk and Kevin Owens lead to a three-way rivalry for the Undisputed WWE Championship?
Will Kevin Owens get another opportunity after coming so close to defeating Punk?
Can Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton make it to their showdown without violating Nick Aldis’ no-contact stipulation?
And when will Blake Monroe finally make her official SmackDown in-ring debut after attacking Giulia before the bell?
With the WWE Championship picture suddenly thrown into chaos and several new rivalries taking shape, SmackDown’s next chapter could be just as explosive as the Toronto show.
For now, CM Punk remains champion, Kevin Owens is left searching for another opportunity, Sami Zayn has made himself impossible to ignore, and Blake Monroe has announced her arrival in ruthless fashion.
WWE’s blue brand certainly did not leave Toronto quietly.
