iPhone 17 vs iPhone 18 Pro: Nigerian Price, Specs And Verdict

If you walk into a phone shop in Ikeja or Wuse this week asking for “the iPhone 18”, you will be offered one of two phones: the iPhone 18 Pro or the bigger iPhone 18 Pro Max. The plain iPhone 18 does not exist yet. Apple has held it back until spring 2027, according to MacRumors.

So for Nigerian buyers, the real iPhone 17 vs iPhone 18 choice today is between last year's iPhone 17 range and the two new Pro models. The short answer is simple. If you already own an iPhone 17 Pro, keep it. If you are on an iPhone 16 Pro or older and can afford the Naira price, the iPhone 18 Pro is a real step up.

Every figure in this article comes from Apple itself, from Nigerian news outlets, or from independent reviewers who tested the phones. All sources are linked at the end.

How to buy the iPhone 18 Pro in Nigeria

Apple does not run its own shop or online store in Nigeria. Its Nigerian web page sends buyers to Apple Authorised Resellers instead, Pulse Nigeria reports. That means every new iPhone sold here has been imported by a business, and the business sets the price.

Nigeria was also not on Apple's list of first-wave countries. When pre-orders opened on 12 September, buyers here had two options:

Pre-order through a Nigerian retailer. One Lagos seller, TCStore, asked for a 50 per cent deposit (₦1.25 million for the 256GB Pro) and promised to handle buying, shipping, customs and delivery.
Order from an Apple store abroad. This needs a foreign payment card, an overseas delivery address and a way to bring the phone home.

Pulse Nigeria notes that the local retailer route is simpler for most people, because the seller deals with international shipping. Lagos reseller MacCenter lists the iPhone 18 series from ₦2,260,000.

iPhone 18 Pro price in Nigeria (in naira)

Apple's American prices are US$1,199 for the iPhone 18 Pro and US$1,299 for the Pro Max. Both are US$100 more than last year's iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max. In Nigeria, the phones cost far more than a straight dollar conversion, because importers add shipping, customs duty and their own margin.

Here is what sellers and analysts have reported so far:

TCStore listed the 256GB iPhone 18 Pro at ₦2.5 million, the 256GB Pro Max at ₦2.9 million and the 512GB Pro Max at ₦3.4 million (Pulse Nigeria).
MacCenter lists the series from ₦2,260,000.
BusinessDay worked out that the Pro Max's dollar price equals about ₦1.72 million at the 11 September exchange rate of ₦1,326.79 to the dollar, before any import costs. It cited market estimates of ₦2.35 million to ₦2.5 million for the base Pro Max.

BusinessDay also measured the price against Nigerian pay. Using its figures for the Pro Max at ₦2.5 million, a realistic shop price, here is how many months of full salary it takes to buy one:

₦70,000 a month (national minimum wage): about 35.7 months. That is almost three years of pay, with nothing spent on food, rent or transport.
₦150,000 a month: about 16.7 months, more than a year's full income.
₦200,000 a month: 12.5 months, a full year's pay and then some.
₦250,000 a month: 10 months, most of a year's salary.
₦300,000 a month: about 8.3 months, still more than half a year's pay.
₦500,000 a month: 5 months. Even a well-paid worker would need to save for many months, since nobody can spend all their income on one item.

BusinessDay points out that these numbers assume every naira of salary goes to the phone. In reality, people pay for food, housing, transport, electricity and data first, so saving up takes much longer. It also notes that when the naira weakens, iPhones get dearer here even if Apple does not change its dollar price.

iPhone 18 Pro in Nigeria: SIM type and features that won't work here

A few details in Apple's announcement matter more here than in America. They come from Apple's iPhone 18 Pro press release.

Check the SIM type. Apple sells an eSIM-only version (no slot for a physical SIM card) in 12 places, including the US, Canada, Japan, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Nigeria is not on the list, so a phone meant for the Nigerian or UK market keeps a SIM tray. But Nigerian sellers import their stock, so if a phone was bought in one of those 12 places, you could be handed an eSIM-only model. It gets about two extra hours of battery life, but you must confirm your network can move your line to an eSIM before you pay. Pulse Nigeria also advises buyers to confirm the SIM configuration first.

Battery figures you see online may be American. Apple's headline numbers (36 hours of video for the Pro, 45 for the Pro Max) are for the eSIM-only models. Apple's UK store lists 43 hours for the SIM-tray Pro Max, which is the figure closer to what most Nigerian buyers will get.

Some new features will not work here yet.

iPhone 18 release date: what Apple has launched so far

Apple launched the iPhone 17 family on 9 September 2025: the iPhone 17, the ultra-thin iPhone Air, and the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max.

A year later, on 9 September 2026, it announced only the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. They went on sale on 18 September in more than 65 countries, including the UK, and in 20 more a week later. It was also the first Apple launch led by new chief executive John Ternus.

The same event introduced Apple's first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, priced from US$1,999. Pulse Nigeria reports pre-orders open on 16 October. It is not part of this comparison.

The cheaper models come later. MacRumors reports that the standard iPhone 18, a budget iPhone 18e and a second iPhone Air are planned for spring 2027. Apple has not confirmed any details, so anything you read about their features is still rumour.

In short: today's comparison is iPhone 17 (and 17 Pro) versus iPhone 18 Pro. The rest of this article looks at what has changed.

iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro: design and screen

From the front, you will struggle to tell the iPhone 18 Pro from the iPhone 17 Pro. Both use the same aluminium body, and Engadget measured the sizes as unchanged. Both are water-resistant to the same IP68 standard.

The new phones are heavier, though. According to 9to5Mac:

iPhone 17 Pro: 206 g → iPhone 18 Pro: 211 g
iPhone 17 Pro Max: 233 g → iPhone 18 Pro Max: 249 g

That 16 g jump on the Pro Max is noticeable in the hand. 9to5Mac's reviewer said it was right at the limit of what he was willing to carry, and he chose the smaller Pro because of it.

The back looks neater. On the 17 Pro, the glass panel on the back was a different shade from the metal around it, and many owners hid it under a case. On the 18 Pro, the glass matches the metal. The colours are new too: black, silver, glacier (a light blue) and burgundy, replacing last year's cosmic orange, deep blue and silver.

The screen itself is the same: 6.3 inches or 6.9 inches, smooth 120Hz scrolling, always-on, and up to 3,000 nits of brightness outdoors, which helps under strong sunlight. The one visible change is the Dynamic Island, the black pill at the top of the screen. It is about 25 per cent smaller, because Apple moved part of the Face ID sensor beneath the display. It can now show three live updates at once (a ride, a delivery and a timer, say), instead of two.

The standard iPhone 17 has the same size, speed and brightness of screen, according to Apple. What it lacks is the Pro's toughened glass back, its bigger 6.9-inch option and its cooling system.

iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro: speed and performance

The iPhone 18 Pro's new chip, the A20 Pro, is the clearest upgrade. It is Apple's first phone chip made with a finer 2-nanometre process (the A19 Pro in the 17 Pro uses 3nm), which generally means more speed for less power. Apple also gave it an extra graphics core and a second AI engine.

Tom's Guide tested both generations side by side:

Overall processor speed (Geekbench 6 multi-core): the iPhone 17 Pro scored 9,988 and the iPhone 18 Pro 12,800; the 17 Pro Max scored 9,968 and the 18 Pro Max 12,789. That is about 28 per cent faster. You notice it when exporting videos or juggling many apps, not when chatting on WhatsApp.
Gaming graphics (3DMark Solar Bay, frames per second): the 17 Pro managed 46.4 and the 18 Pro 61.93; the 17 Pro Max 46.6 and the 18 Pro Max 67.9. Games run a third to almost half faster, so heavy games look smoother.
On-phone AI tasks (Geekbench AI): the 17 Pro scored 49,050 and the 18 Pro 69,245; the 17 Pro Max 48,549 and the 18 Pro Max 71,974. AI tasks are about 40 to 48 per cent faster. That is a big gain, but not the "double" Apple advertised.
Holding speed over a long session (stress test stability): the 17 Pro scored 61.1 per cent and the 18 Pro 62.8 per cent; the 17 Pro Max 65.2 per cent and the 18 Pro Max 79.4 per cent. Only the Pro Max stays much faster during long gaming. The smaller Pro barely improved.

That last result matters if you game for long stretches. Apple fitted a much bigger cooling plate (a "vapour chamber") and claims up to 40 per cent better sustained speed. Tom's Guide found that true for the Pro Max but not the smaller Pro.

In everyday use, reviewers found little to worry about. 9to5Mac said heat, once a weak point on the iPhone 15 Pro and 16 Pro, is now one of the phone's strengths. Engadget said the 18 Pro only got hot once, during heavy camera testing, and cooled down quickly.

The standard iPhone 17 uses the plainer A19 chip. Apple says it is 1.5 times faster than the chip in the iPhone 13, which is more than enough for everyday tasks.

iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro: camera

The big camera change is on the main lens. Every iPhone until now had a fixed aperture, the opening that lets light into the camera. On the iPhone 18 Pro, six small blades can open and close that opening, like on a professional camera. It moves between four settings, from very wide (f/1.48) to narrow (f/4). The 17 Pro's main lens is fixed at f/1.78.

The other cameras (ultra-wide, 4x zoom and the 18MP selfie camera) are the same as on the 17 Pro, as ProVideo Coalition confirmed.

What does the moving aperture do for you?

Better night photos. The lens opens wider in the dark and lets in more light. In 9to5Mac's side-by-side tests, night shots from the 18 Pro Max were cleaner, with less grainy noise, and Night mode took slightly less time. That is useful at evening owambes and dimly lit restaurants.
Sharper group photos. When people or objects are close to the camera, the lens narrows so both the front and the back of the scene stay sharp. The back row at a family photo is less likely to come out blurry.
Little change in daylight. In ordinary bright outdoor shots, 9to5Mac saw almost no difference from the 17 Pro. The 18 Pro's photos look slightly brighter, but that comes from Apple's updated processing, not the new lens.

If you like controlling your camera yourself, Apple now gives you manual settings for the aperture, shutter speed and colour balance inside its own Camera app. Video also improves: the blurred-background "Cinematic" mode now records at 4K and 60 frames per second (up from 30), and you can add the blur after filming. Engadget found that after-the-fact blur hit-or-miss.

The standard iPhone 17 is a step below both Pros. It has a 48MP main camera and a 48MP ultra-wide, with the same 18MP selfie camera, but no dedicated zoom lens, according to Apple.

iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro: battery life and charging

Apple calls the iPhone 18 Pro Max's battery gain the biggest in iPhone history. Independent testing tells a more modest story.

Tom's Guide ran each phone on non-stop web browsing over 5G, at a fixed screen brightness, until it died:

iPhone 17: Apple claims up to 30 hours of video. Tom's Guide did not test it, but Apple rates it a little below the 17 Pro.
iPhone 17 Pro: Apple claims up to 33 hours. It lasted 15 hours 21 minutes in the browsing test, which is last year's starting point.
iPhone 18 Pro: Apple claims up to 36 hours. It lasted 16 hours 17 minutes, or 56 minutes more. That is a real gain, mostly thanks to the more efficient chip.
iPhone 17 Pro Max: Apple claims up to 39 hours. It lasted 17 hours 54 minutes, already a very long-lasting phone.
iPhone 18 Pro Max: Apple claims up to 45 hours. It lasted 18 hours 27 minutes, only 33 minutes more, far less than the six extra hours Apple's figures suggest.

Apple's ratings are from its press release and 9to5Mac's comparison table. Remember that SIM-tray phones, the kind normally sold for Nigeria, get about two hours less video playback than those ratings.

Why such a small gain? iFixit took the phones apart and found the US iPhone 18 Pro's battery is only about 1 per cent bigger than the 17 Pro's (4,288mAh against 4,252mAh), Tom's Guide reports.

In daily life, both are comfortable. 9to5Mac's reviewer got a day and a half from the Pro Max and a full day from the smaller Pro. That helps on days when NEPA takes light and you are relying on a power bank.

Charging is faster. With a 60W USB-C charger (sold separately), both 18 Pro models reach 50 per cent in about 15 minutes, against about 20 minutes for the 17 Pro and the iPhone 17. Wireless MagSafe charging stays at 25W.

A year of living with the iPhone 17 Pro

Most owners are happy, with one repeated complaint. In MacRumors' one-year review, a user who carries his 17 Pro without a case found the screen held up very well, with only faint scratches. The battery lasted a full day of heavy use, and the phone stayed cool.

The weak spot is the metal body. Soon after launch in 2025, owners reported scratches around the raised camera area on the back. A microscope study by repair firm iFixit, reported by TechRadar, confirmed the edges of that camera area as the problem spot. A year on, some case-free owners in MacRumors' forum describe dents and small chips on the edges. The iPhone 18 Pro uses the same aluminium design, so it is wise to budget for a good case with either phone.

The first two weeks with the iPhone 18 Pro

The new phones had a shaky start. Within a day of launch, some owners said their phones froze and restarted when Face ID failed to recognise them, for example when opening a locked app. Because the 18 Pro is the first iPhone with part of Face ID under the screen, some feared a hardware fault. Apple said software could fix it, and on 28 September released iOS 27.0.1. MacRumors reports it fixes the restarts, a colour flaw in some 2x zoom photos on a small number of phones, and a touchscreen freeze. If you buy an 18 Pro, install this update first.

Reviewers mostly like the phone but not the price. Tom's Guide called the pair the best phones money can buy, while noting the US$100 rise and extra weight. Engadget compared it to Apple's old "S" years, when the new model was a polished version of the last one. Under 9to5Mac's review, the most-liked reader comment said the Pro Max's real-life battery gain looked too small to justify the price, and the writer planned to buy the cheaper 17 Pro Max instead.

On software, the new Siri AI is a real improvement: Tom's Guide found it much more helpful at understanding personal context and handling several tasks at once, though not yet smarter than Gemini or ChatGPT. It also runs on the iPhone 17 Pro Max, Tom's Guide notes in its head-to-head test, so you do not need the new phone to get it.

iPhone 17 vs iPhone 17 Pro vs iPhone 18 Pro: key specs compared

This compares the three 6.3-inch models. The Pro Max versions have the same chips and cameras, with a bigger screen, more weight and a bigger battery.

Chip: iPhone 17 has the A19, iPhone 17 Pro the A19 Pro, and iPhone 18 Pro the A20 Pro (2nm). In plain terms: the 18 Pro is about 28 per cent faster than the 17 Pro in processor tests. The iPhone 17 is the slowest of the three but still quick for daily use.

Should you upgrade from iPhone 17 to iPhone 18 Pro?

The iPhone 18 Pro beats the 17 Pro on speed, night photos and battery, but the gaps are small for such a big naira outlay. Engadget and 9to5Mac both advise iPhone 17 Pro owners to keep their phones.

You have an iPhone 17 Pro or 17 Pro Max. Stay put. You would spend over ₦2 million for a better night camera, faster gaming and under an hour of extra battery in tests. You already get iOS 27 and Siri AI.
You have a standard iPhone 17. The jump is bigger: a zoom lens, a much faster chip, better cooling and longer battery life. It is worth it only if you use your camera or play games a lot. Your current phone is not falling behind.
You have an iPhone 16 Pro or older. This is who the 18 Pro is really for. 9to5Mac says now is a great time to upgrade from a 16 Pro or earlier.
Battery life is your top priority. The 18 Pro Max lasts longest, but in testing it beat the 17 Pro Max by only about half an hour. If you find a sealed 17 Pro Max at a good price, it is close.
You want the cheaper iPhone 18. Wait until spring 2027, and do not trust any seller claiming to have one now. Apple has not released it.
