Nigeria's Flamingos meet Mexico on Thursday 29 October in the Round of 16 of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Morocco, with a quarter-final place at stake. The Flamingos v Mexico U-17 tie arrives days after Nigeria stunned defending champions North Korea, and it is the sharpest test yet for coach Akeem Busari's young side.
Premium Times lists the kick-off as 4:00 PM West Africa Time, while ACLSports says 3:00 p.m. local time on Pitch 2 at the Women's Football Complex. The two times describe the same afternoon in different zones, so check your broadcaster before tuning in.

How Nigeria reached the last 16
The Flamingos did not have an easy start before the flamingos vs Mexico u-17 tie. According to The Eagle Online, they lost 2-1 to Poland in their opening Group B game, then beat Puerto Rico 2-0.
The final group match was the statement ahead of flamingos vs Mexico u-17. Nigeria beat North Korea 3-1, a result that gave them six points and second place in the group. allAfrica reported goals from Oluwakemi Adegbuyi in the 15th minute, Oluebube Umejiaku in the 38th and Kanyinsola Yusuf from a free-kick in the 56th.
North Korea still topped the group on goal difference. DAZN noted that the defeat was reportedly their first loss in 18 World Cup matches, which puts Nigeria's win in context before flamingos vs Mexico u-17.
What Mexico bring to the Flamingos vs Mexico U-17 tie
Mexico are a proven knockout side at this level. They finished third at the 2025 World Cup and were runners-up in 2018, according to ACLSports.
Nigeria's own best finish is third place, achieved in 2022 in India. A win on Thursday would put the Flamingos one step closer to matching or improving on that record.
The Premium Times preview stresses that the Flamingos must turn their chances into goals while staying disciplined for the full match. In a knockout game, a lapse in concentration can end a campaign in minutes.
Busari's squad and the mental side
The Flamingos are led by captain Harmony Chidi, and Complete Sports lists a 21-player squad that includes forwards Oluebube Umejiaku, Precious Oscar and Oluwakemi Adegbuyi. Two of those forwards scored against North Korea.
Busari has spoken about the temperament of his players. After the Puerto Rico win, he told Complete Sports that the team was steadier than in the Poland game, saying: "they were more calm than the Poland game." He also said his young players need counselling after setbacks.
That composure will matter against an experienced opponent. Nigeria bounced back from the Poland loss, and they must show the same resilience if Mexico score first.
Africa's four survivors
Nigeria are one of four African teams left in the competition. Morocco and Ghana play on Wednesday, before the Flamingos and Kenya take the field on Thursday, so those results will set the mood for the continent.
Hosts Morocco face North Korea at 4:00 PM WAT. They reached the knockout round as one of the four best third-placed teams, with a goal difference of -2, Morocco World News reported, after a 4-2 group defeat by Germany.
Ghana's Black Maidens play Argentina at 7:00 PM WAT. Citi Sports Online says they finished second in Group C with four points, after a 3-0 loss to Norway, a 3-3 draw with Brazil and a 2-0 win over Canada. Assistant coach Bashiru-Deen Sumaila told Africa Soccer: "The girls are very poised and ready for the game."
Kenya's historic run
Kenya's Junior Starlets face Japan at 7:00 PM WAT on Thursday, straight after the Nigeria match. Eastleigh Voice reports that they reached the knockout stage for the first time, beating Samoa 4-0 after losing 3-0 to China and 6-1 to the USA.
Defence is the concern. Kenya conceded nine goals in their first two group games. Coach Mildred Cheche told Citizen Digital: "It is not an easy side to defeat, but we will prepare well, do our best, and then we will see what happens,".
What happens next
Whoever wins the Nigeria–Mexico match on Thursday progresses to the last eight, while the beaten side is eliminated; the knockout stage allows no replays or second chances.
Should Morocco and Ghana both get the right results on Wednesday, the Flamingos might step out with a whole continent cheering them on. Nigeria will be counting on these players to repeat the form they showed against North Korea when they meet Mexico:
- Adegbuyi
- Umejiaku
- Yusuf
