Edwin Anayo Nwonu Pledged Good-Quality Schools Condition

Nwonu of the NDC vows better schools for voters across the Ezza North/Ishielu seat in the House of Representatives

Edwin Anayo Nwonu, flag-bearer of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ezza North/Ishielu Federal Constituency of Ebonyi State, has pledged to deliver good-quality schooling to the people of the area should he win in the 2027 nationwide polls. He says education is central to the area's prospects.

Schooling projects Nwonu has already carried out in the Ezza North/Ishielu seat in the House of Representatives

A onetime House of Representatives member for the constituency, where he served for eight years, Edwin Anayo Nwonu said that he had backed schoolchildren and undergraduates through scholarships, learning materials and the settlement of exam fees, especially for those taking the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Key point: He says education is central to the area's prospects

The politician spoke in an interview in Abakaliki, the seat of government of the state, on Friday. Among his earlier interventions, he named desks, textbooks and other teaching materials, along with help for those studying at higher institutions.

If voted back into the House of Representatives, he said, he would keep these efforts going and widen them, stressing that the constituency's prospects depend heavily on developing education.

Edwin Anayo Nwonu reasons for wanting to go back to the House of Representatives

Asked why he wanted to go back to the National Assembly, Nwonu pointed to what he called a vacuum in leadership and a need to bring proper representation back to the constituency.

He insisted that personal ambition was not behind the move, saying instead that constituents had urged him to come back and build on what he had previously achieved.

Asked why he wanted to go back to the House of Representatives instead of setting his sights on the Senate, Nwonu replied that what matters most to him is representing his people well, not climbing to loftier political positions.

“I’m not an ambitious person. I believe in sincerity, and I believe in the people. The people called me to come and contest this election,” he stated.

Federal jobs and projects across 27 wards

He also asserted that, during his earlier stint, people in all 27 wards of the Ezza North/Ishielu Federal Constituency had benefited from federal projects and jobs, and that these interventions had forged a political bond between him and the electorate.

According to Edwin Anayo Nwonu, his record in office includes the following:

  • federal jobs for over 70 constituents during the opening four years of his tenure;
  • projects brought to the different wards in his second term.

“During my first four years, I gave over 70 people federal jobs. In my second four years, there were projects across the 27 wards. That was what I used to campaign for my second tenure,” he said.

Promising to build on what he did before if voted back, Nwonu argued that his experience and his grasp of how the National Assembly operates would put him in a stronger position to bring more federal jobs and developmental projects for the people he represents.

A call for an end to political violence as 2027 approaches

On fears of political violence in the run-up to the 2027 nationwide polls, Nwonu urged young people to refuse to be used by politicians as tools of violence, cautioning that those who stir up electoral unrest tend to keep their own children out of harm's way.

He restated his pledge to a peaceful election process and called on constituents to put their own future first and to hold those asking for their votes in 2027 to account.
