The Covenant Season 1 review scores an 8/10 on Netflix
Rating: 8/10
The Covenant Season 1 review comes down to one verdict: the Netflix series earns a solid 8/10 for its relentless twists, its dangerous forest world, and its committed cast. Some movies take their time getting you interested. Others give you a reason to stay from the very first scene. The Covenant belongs to the second category.
I stumbled upon the series on Netflix, noticed that another season was on the way, and decided to see what all the excitement was about. I was not prepared for what I got. From the opening gunfire to the constant twists, betrayals, and shocking revelations, The Covenant had me hooked almost immediately.
And now that I have finished the first season, I can confidently say that it deserves its flowers.
What started as a story I casually decided to watch quickly became one of those shows where you keep telling yourself, “Just one more episode.”
A Forest Full of Dangerous People
One of the first things that caught my attention was the world the series created. We are introduced to different powerful gangs operating within the same forest, each with its own interests, influence, and appetite for violence.
There is Stella and her group, Dabolo, and Scorch, arguably the biggest and most intimidating of them all.
My first question was simple: How do you have all these major criminal groups operating in the same territory? How do they coexist? And how long can that arrangement possibly last?
Apparently, not very long.
It is fascinating how the actions of one person begin to trigger a chain reaction among these groups. One kidnapping leads to another, revenge becomes a motivation for more violence, and before long, everybody seems to be caught in a dangerous game where nobody can fully trust anybody.
The series does an excellent job of showing how interconnected these criminal operations are. What initially looks like separate acts of violence gradually becomes part of a much larger story.
And that is where things get interesting.
The Storytelling in The Covenant Season 1 Review: What Worked
One thing I genuinely appreciated about The Covenant was how it unravelled its story.
There was no unnecessary dragging, no feeling that an episode existed simply to fill time, and very few moments where I found myself wondering why a particular scene was happening.
The revelations came at the right moments.
We gradually discover who Belema is, how she ended up where she was, and the circumstances surrounding her story. We also learn more about Kachi, the girl who was tied up, and how the different events connect.
What I particularly enjoyed was that the series did not throw every answer at us at once. It allowed the story to develop, giving viewers enough information to form theories while keeping some of its biggest secrets hidden.
There was always something to uncover, and just when you thought you had figured out where the story was going, another revelation came along.
That is the kind of storytelling that keeps an audience invested in The Covenant Season 1 from start to finish, and it is the strongest part of this review.
I Knew the Police Officer Was Hiding Something!
Let me talk about the police officer Dagogo's friend kept approaching for help.
From the moment that character became part of the story, I had my suspicions. Something just did not sit right with me.
I kept wondering whether the officer was connected to one of the major players. Was it Naomi? Was it Scorch? Was there somebody behind the scenes manipulating events while pretending to be on the side of justice?
I was convinced that there was more to the character than we were being shown.
And I love it when a series gives you enough clues to suspect something without making the answer too obvious.
Of course, having your suspicions confirmed is one thing. Discovering just how deep the betrayal goes is another.
Scorch, Belema and the Reverend: The Twists I Did Not See Coming
Now, this is where the series completely got me.
Finding out that Scorch was in cahoots with Belema was already a major revelation. But the Reverend?
Oh, my goodness!
That was one twist I genuinely did not see coming.
Throughout the season, the Reverend's involvement was not something I had seriously considered. So discovering that he was connected to the bigger picture completely changed how I looked at the events leading up to that moment.
It also left me with an important question: Was there a plan all along to eliminate Stella and her children?
Considering that Stella killed the Reverend's friend, who was also Belema's father, there is an understandable motive for revenge. But was everything that followed part of a carefully arranged plan? How much did the Reverend know, and how long had he been involved?
These are the kinds of questions that make me even more interested in what the next season will reveal.
The fact that the series managed to keep such an important connection hidden until the later episodes deserves credit.
The Acting Brought the Story to Life
Beyond the storyline, the performances deserve serious applause.
The cast did an excellent job of making the characters believable. The tension, the confrontations, the fear, the desperation, and the moments of betrayal all felt convincing.
Nobody seemed to be performing just for the sake of delivering lines. The characters had presence, and the actors brought the intensity required for a story of this nature.
I must particularly applaud the actor who played the Reverend. That performance deserves recognition, especially considering how the character's involvement in the story eventually unfolds.
The series also deserves credit for its production. The opening scenes, the gunfire, the action sequences, and the atmosphere created around the forest all contributed to making the story immersive.
It was not just a crime story being narrated to us; it felt like we were watching events unfold right in front of us.
An 8/10 First Season, and I Am Ready for More
For me, the first season of The Covenant is a solid 8/10. In this review of The Covenant Season 1, these are the things that earned the score:
- It kept me interested from beginning to end.
- It delivered several unexpected twists.
- It maintained a level of tension that made it difficult to stop watching.
I particularly enjoyed the way the writers connected seemingly unrelated events and gradually revealed the relationships between the characters. The series understood that a good thriller is not just about gunfights, kidnappings, and killings. It is also about motives, secrets, alliances, and the consequences of decisions.
Could some things have been explored differently? Perhaps. But overall, the season delivered an entertaining and engaging experience.
And now, I am left waiting for the next season with plenty of questions.
- What happens to Stella and her children?
- How far does the Reverend's involvement go?
- What exactly is the relationship between Scorch and Belema?
- What other secrets are still waiting to come out?
I went into The Covenant simply looking for something interesting to watch on Netflix. I came out completely invested in its characters and their complicated world.
If the first season is anything to go by, the next one has a lot to live up to.
For now, I am giving Season 1 an 8/10. And yes, I will absolutely be watching Season 2.
