The National Leadership of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) has appreciated Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde for prioritising the welfare of its staff despite the COVID-19 induced downturn in the country.
The union noted the efforts of the governor in handling the myriads of problems confronting the two Colleges of Education in Oyo State: Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Oyo (EACOED) and College of Education, Lanlate.
This was contained in a release jointly signed by Comrades Nuhu Ogirima and Taiwo A. Olayanju, COEASU President and Secretary respectively and made available by the Chairman, COEASU, EACOED Chapter, Comrade ‘Segun Oyewumi in Ibadan on Saturday.
“It is on record that despite the dwindling economy and in the face of economic hardship occasioned by the novel Coronavirus pandemic, you have ensured that the well-being of our members, and indeed the workers in the State takes precedent.
“As evident in the defrayment of indebted workers’ salaries owed by the past administration and prompt payment of workers’ salaries by the 25th of every month,” the union said.
The COEASU leadership entreated for more wisdom for the Governor in the discharge of his duties in the governance of the State, having highlighted the achievements of the state government.
They lauded the labour-friendly disposition of the Governor which has brought about industrial harmony in the State and restoration of the pride of education in the Pace-Setting State.
“Be rest assured that the Union is ready to partner with your administration to achieve the desired goals in Teacher Education in particular and education in general,” it said.
Speaking further, the union made a case for the negotiation of a new affordable and payable tax regime by these Colleges of Education.
It also expressed its hope on the implementation of the consequential adjustment on the minimum wage for the Colleges.
“The Union would also appreciate your implementation of the consequential adjustment on the minimum wage for staff of the Colleges.
“This passionate appeal is borne out of the need to ease the financial burden on our members made worse by the Coronavirus pandemic,” the release stated.
