In its efforts to help Nigerians keep in touch with loved ones during the coronavirus pandemic situation, MTN Nigeria offers free 300 SMS to all Networks.

The SMS, which is set for 10 daily is up to 30 days. Thus, you can send a maximum of 10 free SMS each day for 30 days, totalling 300 SMS.

We understand how important it is to keep in touch with loved ones during this period. Now you can with FREE 300 SMS to all networks. #StaySafe #StayConnected pic.twitter.com/85jktTEveh

MTN’s offer was met with mixed reviews on twitter. While some appreciated the Network for helping out, others criticized the network for not offering “free data”. Most commented that SMS is rarely used and it would have been better if the Network had offered Data to surf WhatsApp, which has now been the SMS for most Nigerians.

Here are some reactions on Twitter:

Onyie – We dont need free SMS. Give us free data. Stingy network

Michael Oko – This is trying to use our brain or what? All messages today are mostly done through WhatsApp, Twitter, WeChat, Facebook etc. So it’s obvious that what we need is data @MTNNG. Think again, find a way around it. Well done for coming up with something but this is not what we need.

Giovanna – …This Life we need data more than sms. MTN Nigeria is just playing with Nigerians. Why won’t they gift their customers data and phone call airtime? When they know Nigerians rarely send SMS these days because there are various messaging and social media apps for texts.

Muhammad Babangida Kurfi – This is Commendable, But We’re in Digital World Today,Nigerians will better Appreciate Data (1month unlimited Subription) to Access the internet and Free Airtime in this #Quarantine Period #StayHome let’s consider the situation we’re in,indeed Data is Oxygen.

Hafsah – Data would have been better or even appreciated, SMS is outdated, reduce the price of subscription even if you can’t make it free, be considerate during this trying time.
