Coronavirus cases have now reached 1 million worldwide.
COVID – 19, as it is called, was first reported to World Health Organisation (WHO) on 31 December 2019.
In Just 3 Months, the deadly virus was able to reach all continents of the world except Antarctica. However, in Africa the virus has infected all but 4 countries – Lesotho, Comoros, Sao Tome and Principe, and South Sudan.
USA continues to be the hub of the virus, with over 240,000 cases and over 6,000 deaths, in which New York leads the park. Public health officials have emphasised that the number of deaths that will result from coronavirus will be less, provided people keep to social distancing.
In Africa, of the 50 infected countries, South Africa remains the worst-hit nation. So far, South Africa has recorded over 1,000 cases with 86 deaths.
To curb the menace, South imposed a 21-day lockdown, which is one of the extreme globally. The lockdown ensures that South Africans do not leave their homes except to get essential goods and services. It excludes the purchase of alcohol and cigarettes, and outdoor exercise.
Nigeria, has adopted to similar measures, only that it applies to states with the most cases – Lagos, Abuja, Ogun.
Lagos, being the hub of the virus, was initially placed under a dusk to dawn curfew by Governor Sanwo-Olu, before the intervention of the Federal Government to place the State on lockdown for 2 weeks.
Just recently, the cases of coronavirus in Nigeria reached 184.
7 new cases were reported in Lagos, and 3 in Abuja, bringing the total cases to 181.
