The Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH), Ikorodu has officially commenced a cage culture pilot project for large scale fish farming at Agbowa-Ikosi Beach, Epe in its bid to support the state government food security project in Lagos.
Mr Olanrewaju Kuye, the Director of Information and Public Relations of LASPOTECH stated this on Tuesday that the project was also intended to serve as a training and research field for staff and students.
Kuye revealed that to kick-start the project, the polytechnic organised a sensitisation programme titled “Optimizing the Performance of Fisherfolks” at Agbowa-Ikosi fishing community, Epe on July 21,2020.
“The fishermen in the community were exposed to modern fishing business practices,” he said.
According to him, Mr Olumide Metilelu, Acting Rector of the Polytechnic said that would be using this opportunity to improve the lives of the dwellers and also introducing modern fishing techniques.
“The modern fishing techniques would help them solve various challenges in their fishing business.
“The fishing community should imbibe the methods being introduced by the facilitators who are staff of the polytechnic, in order to boost their productivity and strengthening food security in Lagos State.
“The polytechnic’s management will support in their areas of need, and subsequently, more sensitisation programmes will be held,” Kuye said.
The programme was attended by Chief Shakirudeen Muibi, Traditional ruler of the Agbowa-Ikosi Beach, Dr Adebayo Ashafa, Dean, School of Agriculture and Dr Olusola Babalola, HOD Fisheries Technology of the Polytechnic and others.
