Proverbs and wise sayings have been used to point out the benefits of punctuality.
Some of which are: stitch in time save nine; He who goes to the stream early, will not go home with dirty water; first come, first serve. .
It could be a journey, a task, an assignment, a job or a project. What is important is that you learn to carry out your activities promptly.
However, in Nigeria today, being punctual is not regarded with so much importance. The spirit of urgency is no longer active and we have become infected with slothfulness
Lack of knowledge and the lack of preserving the culture of punctuality by reason of practicing it, are some of the many reasons that has dragged punctuality to the present state of coma.
To this effect, I want us to take a ride down memory lane; pinpoint what punctuality is and how it can be brought back in our ever-changing world.
To be punctual or to be on time; according to the dictionary is the habit or quality of adhering to an appointed time. It is also seen as the characteristic of doing things without delay.
To be on time is to avoid being late for an appointment, lecture, meeting, date, service, etc.
If we must wear the regalia of punctuality, we must shed away laziness and non challant attitude. It is of uttermost importance to change our mentality of taking time for granted. Time is precious. Some say it is money and thus must be valued.
We can also make up our minds to do the following to achieve this feat.
Be purposeful: Doing things with a particular reason or purpose makes you give attention to time and value it. It also helps you to stick to the time you have allotted for it.
Be responsible: Responsible people are perpetual time keepers. They have a family to Carter for, needs to meet, lives to bless, sheep to tend or a business to care for. Hence, they spend time judiciously.
Set goals and have a target: It is very essential to set goals and target as we go about our daily routine. We can’t be here to be there. We can only be in a place par time. For this reason, it is required to draft out what you plan to achieve and it ultimately helps you to stick to time.
Finally, it’s important to practice. Practice pays off. Practice what you learn consistently and you would become better and punctual.
