Association of Registrars of Nigerian Universities (ARNU), has reiterated its commitment to strengthen the administration of Nigerian Universities for better performance.
Dr. Abubakar Mamuda, National Chairman of ARNU, stated this at the 69th Business Meeting of the association on Thursday in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
According to the ARNU Chairman, who doubles as the Registrar of the Federal University of Lafia, strengthening the university’s administration would help the system survive, amid instability in Nigerian universities.
He said that the association consists of 179 Registrars from Federal, States and Private Universities in the country.
The ARNU Chairman said that they would ensure that the system is sanitised to curb social vices such as cultism, exams malpractices among others.
“We would ensure that universities carried out background checks on intending students before they are offered admission, to ensure that cultists expelled in other institutions were not re-admitted,” he said.
Dr Mamuda said that the association would come out with a communique on how to improve the universities’ systems at the end of the meeting.
In his remarks, Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State, said that the decision to hold the meeting was apt, given the effort of the government to reposition and revitalise the education sector for better output.
The governor represented by Hajiya Fatu Sabo, Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, also lauded the registrars for creating such a forum to complement government’s efforts.
Governor Sule explained that his administration in the last two years had allocated more than 30 per cent of its budget to education.
“We allocated N35. 4 billion to the education sector, representing 30 per cent of the 2021 budget, in compliance with UNESCO’s recommendation.
“We would continue to provide infrastructures and facilities in schools, as well as give priority to training and retraining of teachers, to improve their performance,” the governor added.
The governor also appealed to the association, to discuss what they could do on their part, to tackle cases of incessant strikes in Nigerian universities. (NAN)
