Airtel Nigeria is one of the four major telecommunication networks in Nigeria (the others being MTN Nigeria, Globacom, and 9mobile).
If you desire to use Airtel network to browse with your PC (via a modem) or with your smartphone but can’t connect due to the unavailability of configuration settings, then you need to pay attention to the instructions provided in this article, as they would undoubtedly connect you.
First of all, Airtel has three network types – 4G, 3G, and 2G. The 4G network type has a special sim card, and works on devices that support 4G, while the 3g network type works on devices that support 3G, but doesn’t come with a special sim card. The 2G network type, on the other hand typically supports devices that can browse (connect to internet), as it is lowest available network type for internet connection.
Now, if you have just bought a generic modem, and you desire to use the Airtel network to browse, find out if the Modem supports 4G or 3G. Your modem may have 3G inscriptions such as: CDMA, WCDMA, GSM, UMTS, or 4G inscriptions such as: HSDPA, HSUPA, HSPA, HSPA+, LTE.
If your modem or smartphone supports 4G, ensure to purchase an Airtel 4G sim card, so as to enjoy the fast internet speeds the device can reach.
According to Airtel, the Access Point Name (APN) is a requirement for all data users. It serves as the gateway to access the web on the Airtel Network.
Modem
Connect your modem to the PC, after it has installed, locate the internet configuration settings:
Account name: Airtel Internet
Access Point Name (APN): internet.ng.airtel.com
Username: web
Password: web
Number/USSD/Dial: *99#
Protocol/Security: None
Note that depending on your modem manufacturer and version, some configuration settings may not be required. For instance, most modems don’t require username and password, so their fields can be empty. Also the number/ussd may also not be needed.
Phone
Most smartphones automatically detect internet configuration settings once the SIM is enabled. However, if the configuration settings is detected and activated, you may need to manually enter the configuration settings under the Connections/Internet option in the settings, depending on the manufacturer and model of the phone:
Account name: Airtel Internet
Access Point Name (APN): internet.ng.airtel.com
Username: Leave blank
Password: Leave blank
Home Page: http://www.airtel.com.ng
On some Android phones, you may need to tap Authentication type > and type in PAP. You can also get the settings by sending ‘S’ to 232.
