How To Keep Your New Year Resolutions In Check

You Can Make It Next Year

It is going to be the start of a new year soon! Congratulations for making it this far.

The year was great for some, but not so much for others. Although it is important you look forward to the new year with better hopes.

Did you perhaps write down new year resolutions that you hoped to achieve for this year ? How far did you go with them? If you achieved some, all, or nothing. We go again next year.

Before I dive into why writing down your new year’s resolution is never enough and how it does not guarantee actualization, I would love to tell you why it is important to have new year resolutions.

They are plans or a list of things you hope to do before the year ends, which not only give us something to look forward to, but also something to give our lives a purpose.

As a banker hopes to get promoted at work, he works towards it and that gives him a purpose to go to work everyday and give his best. It also helps us live a stable life.

Now, writing down your resolutions never really does it. You can paste it on your walls, place it by your bedside e.t.c, but that is not putting in the work, you have to actually DO something.

Below are a few tips on what can be done to actually bring those resolutions to realisation:

Believe in yourself

The most important step towards achieving anything. You should be your number one fan. You have to believe in yourself; believe in your ability to make things happen.

Don’t overthink it; just do it

If there’s something I tell myself all the time, it is to not over think anything. When you have resolutions that you set your mind to achieve in the new year, try not to think too much about them. Often times we think our selves out of doing great things. The moment you begin to think about it so much; you begin to doubt yourself, you begin to pick out unnecessary reasons why you should not carry out the plan. So instead of thinking too much, why don’t you start acting?

Have a great support system

When you decide to start acting on achieving your resolutions for the year, make sure to tell a trusted friend or family. They will give you the push you need when it seems like you can’t push yourself to continue.

Let’s say you plan to lose some weight in the new year, and along the line you begin to feel less motivated with your new diet and exercises, a friend or family can decide to join you in your morning runs, or order for the same as you at a restaurant just to keep you motivated. Do not underestimate the power of a great support system.

Don’t put too much pressure on yourself

Do not make it a do or die affair. Understand that it is okay if you don’t achieve all or any of them. There’s always next year. If you don’t understand and accept this, you’ll find yourself feeling like a failure when you don’t accomplish them.

Have a reason for your resolution

Do you want to lose weight only because you want to have a “summer” body? Or because you want to live a healthier life? Do you want to get promoted at work only because you want to feel how other promoted folks feel? Or you want to be able to earn more and sort out your bills thereby living a debt free life?

Ask yourself these questions and be honest with yourself. This is because when you feel the urge to give up sometimes, these reasons are what keeps you going.

I wish you the best of the new year!
