The building of a secondary school in Cross Rivers, Diamond Grammar College, Ikang has collapsed, killing two students and injuring several others.
The tragedy, according to investigations by Geeky Nigeria, showed that it started while it was raining heavily on Friday afternoon, during the time the students were writing their second term examinations in the school.
Further findings revealed that two of the victims died on the spot, the others succumbed to injuries sustained at a hospital on Monday morning.
According to sources from eye-witnesses, the incident has thrown the community of Ikang into bewilderment, as there were not expecting such tragedy at that time. This has brought a lot of pain and suffering to the families of the victims.
“I saw dead bodies of students being moved out of the school immediately after the building collapsed.
“It was a very horrible sight on Friday; everywhere was in chaos as a result of the incident.
“The heavy rain compounded the whole problem as it made the evacuation of students trapped in the collapsed building quite difficult for rescuers,” an eyewitness living close to the school revealed to SaharaReporters.
The Commissioner for Quality Education in Cross River State, Mr Godwin Amanke, confirmed the tragedy on Monday.
According to him, efforts are being put in place with the owner of the school to forestall any future occurrence.
He stated that the two injured students were receiving treatments at the hospital but they couldn’t make it, as they died, earlier hours of Monday morning.
