Nigeria is a country to be reckoned with, a strong force in Africa, with the largest population so far.
The natural endowments in the country can not be over-emphasized. It is indeed true that mother nature has blessed us. However, I find it sad that with all these gifts, the country seems to be at a standstill, or is she even retrogressing?
It is bad enough that the country is suffering from a huge economic meltdown. The unemployment level worsening by the day, but what I can not grasp is the killing of fellow countrymen. Not quite long, we woke up to the news of the religious killing of a young female student in Sokoto.
Now, we hear even more stories of killings. Recently, a group of herdsmen stormed a Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo state, on a Sunday morning and massacred harmless, innocent citizens! Is that what we have turned ourselves into? Bloodthirsty citizens?
Yes, the economic situation is bad. Yes, the leaders need to sit up but should we kill ourselves first? Families were wiped off the face of the Earth on Sunday 5th June. I have not gotten over the gory news. What was their crime?
When did it become unlawful to attend social and religious gatherings? Why should we be killed in our own country and by people we regard as countrymen. It has gotten to the point when we must wake up.
All hands must be on deck if we intend to raise healthy children in this country. All hands must be on deck if we have plans of sleeping with both eyes closed. All hands must be on deck to scourge the society of this menace.
A state that can not protect its own is failed. If Nigeria must continue to be a state, we must make it safe for all.
I call on the government to tighten security all over the country. This is the time to protect Nigeria. Nigeria can not be without the people. The arm forces need to be deployed to high crime areas. The state governments own it as a responsibility to curtail the further occurrence of such crimes. Government must continue to create religious tolerance awareness in the country. Those involved in the killings need to be brought to book. We all need to sit up!
It is their responsibility as much as ours, to safeguard ourselves. Report suspicious activities and stay away from violence and unlawful acts. The Christian body must sit up! It is becoming clear that the attacks are being directed at Christians. So we must save ourselves.
Everybody has a right to religion, but some people have decided to usurp their right against others. So we must protect ourselves. Churches need to tighten up on their security outfit. Religious gatherings must be reduced to the minimum. Unnecessarily gatherings must be discouraged.
Again, it’s a time to put all trust in the Holy Spirit. Christians must seek guidance from on high. We must remain focused and proactive. We must seek God with all humility, constantly praying for our country. If crime must be reduced in Nigeria, the change begins with you!
