The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC has urged the Federal Government to bring to an end the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities and other university-related unions.

Mr. Ayuba Wanna, the NLC President made this appeal in his response to the comment of the Director -General, International Labour Organization at the 110th international Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland. The conference which commenced on Tuesday, June 7, 2022 has the tag, “Social Justice, Decent Work.”

In his remarks, the NLC has drawn the attention of the Federal Government on the need to end the universities workers’ agitations.

“We call on the government to bring this strike to an end without further delay,” he emphasized.

Mr. Ayuba reiterated that NLC had in a letter to the President Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd), given advice on using a notable delegation to end the industrial action.

Furthermore, Wabba indicated that one of the points in their grievances was the use of the University Transparency and Accountability, UTAS, a salary payment tool put together by ASUU.

“I think the process has been concluded. What we are waiting for is for that process to be reconvened again and for that issue to be resolved. We opened that channel of intervention among others,” he also added.

“The best way to resolve disputes under the ILO rule is through a social dialogue process that works and that reflects collective bargaining agreement,” he was quoted as saying.
