ASUU Strike

The ongoing industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU will soon be a thing of the past, the Federal Government hinted on Wednesday.

According to the Government, there are no indications that a different payment system will be allowed for all labour groups in higher institutions.

Dr. Chris Ngige, the Hon. Minister of Labour and Employment, made this known at a media briefing, as monitored by a Geeky Nigeria Correspondent, at the end of the Federal Executive Council meeting chaired by President Muhammad Buhari.

Though the strike is four months old, Ngige affirmed that plans were on top gear to end the current industrial imbroglio orchestrated by payment systems.

ASUU which halted learning in public universities since February 14, 2022, had wanted the use of its own payment system, University Transparency and Accountability Solution, UTAS.

It argued its stance on insinuations that the government-based Integrated Payment and Personnel Information System, IPPIS was defrauding its members.

However, the Federal Government last March noted that UTAS couldn’t accommodate large-scale use as it failed three integrity tests. Apart from UTAS, the SSANU and NASUAEI also initiated their payment platform, University Peculiar Personnel Payroll System, UPPPS.

The Labour Minister maintained that the Federal Government was negotiating with ASUU notwithstanding the claims of it disregarding the union.
