EFCC Raids Bureau De Change Shops In Abuja As Dollar Scarcity Persists

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Bureau de Change operators in parts of Abuja over the biting dollar scarcity.

The Bureau de change shops, located in Wuse Zone 4 axis of FCT, were stormed by the EFCC, in its bid to curb illicit activities of the currency dealers who have mopped up available Dollars.

Geeky NG reports that the exchange rate between the naira and the US dollar has continued to fall with the naira falling beyond the N700/$1 threshold at the parallel market on Wednesday.

As a result of the present dollar scarcity, Nigerians who need dollar for paying school fees abroad and other business are unable to get enough.

The arrest made by the EFCC is part of its ongoing investigation that currency dealers are mopping up and hoarding foreign currency thereby causing a scarcity that is driving up the value of the dollar.

As efforts to reach the EFCC spokesperson proved abortive, our correspondent gathered from a reliable EFCC source, that the commission will be performing coordinated operations in some airports and cities such as Kano, Lagos and Port Harcourt and Kaduna states.
