Ahead Of 2023 Elections: Story So Far

by Ernest Favour

Following recent happenings, it is obvious that the country is in dilemma. From the redesign of the naira to the deadline for the old legal tender.

While the naira redesign is a good thing, the fact that the new notes are scarce makes one wonder – With all the confusion, the election for a new government is just around the corner.

There is a lot of fear among the people. So many refuse to take part in the election process, claiming that a lot of doom will befall those who will go to vote. While I can not refute this, I can not say it is true either.

We are indeed in a very difficult situation right now. It is also true that the calibre of men contesting for the presidency are true men of substance. Indeed, it is hard to decide but decide we must.

It is very easy for people to blame anyone other than themselves for anything going wrong. That is what we have done for years. We institute a government and then we turn around to blame that government, forgetting that we decided to institute the government.

We unknowingly fight ourselves. We come up with a thousand and one reasons not to do the right thing. We become so irresponsible as to ignore our civic duty all in the name of fear. Then when things go south, we look for who to blame.

Yes, we are in a state of confusion. Yes, the election is coming up and yes, some people will try to stir up trouble on the election ground. What then? Should we all lock ourselves inside our houses so the election will handle itself? Should we allow the thugs who do not think of their future to steal our future from us? Should we continue this unprofitable blame game? What then my people?

The presidential election will be held as scheduled on the 25th of February, 2023. It is your duty, my duty, and our duty to come out and vote. It is also your right not to be cajoled into voting for someone you don’t like. It is your right to accept or reject any offering both in cash or in kind by party agents. Do what is best but make sure you vote.

While you’re at it, ensure that your vote is valid. A vote is rendered invalid when the ink on one colon gets smeared on the next colon. This is because it becomes difficult to determine who exactly you’re voting for. So, when you get your ballot paper, it is usually folded vertically.

Do not refold horizontally after voting. It automatically folds back the way it was originally folded. That way, you preserve your vote.
Let’s be the change we desire. Let’s end the blame game. I am part of this movement, what about you?
