“Gi-Fi” refers to “Gigabit Wireless Fidelity,” which is a wireless communication technology that aims to provide high-speed data transmission over short distances.
Gi-Fi is envisioned as a potential successor to existing Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) technologies, aiming to offer significantly higher data transfer rates. The new Gigabit Wireless System offers Multi-Gigabit Wireless technology that eliminates the need for cables (which ranges an average of over 100 among household appliances). Gi-Fi is faster than current short-range wireless technology Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, etc.
Features of Gi-Fi
The key features of Gi-Fi technology include:
1. High speed
Gi-Fi technology is designed to provide gigabit-level data transfer speeds, which are much faster than traditional Wi-Fi technologies. This high speed makes it suitable for applications that require large data transfers such as high-definition video streaming, file sharing, and data-intensive tasks.
2. Short range
Gi-Fi is intended for short-range communication, typically within a range of around 10 metres or less. It is not meant to replace long-range wireless technologies like cellular networks but is more focused on providing ultra-fast connections within a limited area.
3. Frequency band
Gi-Fi utilises the unlicensed frequency band around 60 GHz. This frequency band offers wide bandwidth, which contributes to the high data transfer rates achievable with Gi-Fi.
4. Use of millimetre waves
Gi-Fi employs millimetre-wave frequencies to achieve its high data rates. These frequencies are higher than those common to the traditional Wi-Fi and they can carry more data. However, they are limited in terms of range and penetration through obstacles like walls.
5. Applications
Gi-Fi could be used in scenarios where high-speed and short-range communication are required. For instance, it could be used in home networks, office environments, and areas with high data demand like conferences or events.
Advantages of Gi-Fi
The main advantages of Gi-Fi technology are as follows:
1. Removing cables
For many years, cables have ruled the planet. Higher bit rates and quicker transmission were primarily achieved using optical fibre. It becomes tough and harder to distinguish once the wire is attached. Due to the limitations of the data transmission rate, the scope of the standard infrastructure, and the high cost, wireless access emerged, which nonetheless made Gi-Fi a viable option in place of cables. Gi-Fi technology eliminates the need for cords to link home appliances, and it allows all gadgets to communicate wirelessly.
2. The cost of the chip is low
Only a tiny antenna with a 1mm width is used by the Gi-Fi chip. Less than 2 milliwatts of power enables low-cost semiconductor technology that is simple to incorporate into various applications. Gi-Fi chips are likely made at a lower cost as well. In this manner, a compact design for a mobile phone is possible. Gi-Fi is built on an open and global standard, and by using low-cost, mass-produced chipsets as its standard, costs are drastically reduced.
3. Faster data transmission
Gi-Fi is a 10 times quicker wireless communication technology than Wifi. In an indoor setting, the chips offer multi-gigabit data transmission. It supports the transmission of audio and video data at rates of up to 5 Gbit per second.
4. Privacy and security
Gi-Fi encryption technology offers both content security and privacy. A secure firewall zone is where about 70% of a company’s WiFi deployment is located. In order to effectively safeguard the application layer, encryption has been enhanced by Gi-Fi technology.
