Studies have shown that intermittent fasting has a significant impact on the blood sugar level.
Although food is essential for maintaining one’s overall well-being, studies have shown that what and when we eat influences our blood sugar or blood glucose levels. In recent years, restricted eating, commonly called intermittent fasting, has garnered attention due to its potential to lower blood sugar levels.
The impact of eating patterns on blood sugar can vary based on individual factors and the specific type of restricted eating.

What Is Intermittent Fasting?

Intermittent Fasting (IF) involves alternating periods of fasting (not eating) with periods of eating. Common approaches include fasting for a certain number of hours per day or fasting on specific days of the week.

The Effects of Intermittent Fasting on Blood Sugar

Some studies suggest that intermittent fasting may help improve blood sugar levels and insulin sensitivity. Fasting periods also allow the body to better regulate blood sugar. This is because it helps reduce the frequency of blood sugar spikes while enhancing insulin action.

Time-Restricted Eating (TRE)

Time-restricted eating involves consuming all daily calories within a limited window, typically around 8 to 12 hours. For the remaining hours of the day, no calorie intake occurs.

Time-Restricted Eating Effect on Blood Sugar

Time-restricted eating can improve blood sugar control. By compressing eating into a shorter time frame, there may be fewer opportunities for blood sugar levels to rise excessively.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), “The expected values for normal fasting blood glucose concentration are between 70 mg/dL (3.9 mmol/L) and 100 mg/dL (5.6 mmol/L).”
It’s important to note that individual responses to restricted eating can vary widely. Factors such as overall diet quality, physical activity, genetics, and underlying health conditions can influence how an individual’s blood sugar levels respond to these eating patterns.
Thus, it’s best to talk with a healthcare expert or a trained dietitian before making any big adjustments to your dietary habits, especially if you have pre-existing health concerns like diabetes.
They can assist you in determining whether limited eating is appropriate for your unique circumstances and in developing a strategy that supports your health objectives.
Furthermore, while evidence suggests potential benefits for blood sugar control through restricted eating. It is crucial to approach any dietary changes in a balanced and sustainable way. A well-rounded diet with nutrient-rich foods, appropriate portions, and regular physical activity such as jogging is essential for maintaining your overall health and well-being.
