An Undergraduate of University of Lagos (UNILAG) has made the Institute proud as she set new Guinness World Record with 130.62Km Catwalk.
This remarkable feat was aimed at setting a new Guinness World Record (GWR) for the longest distance walked by a model.
The event was not just about breaking records but also about proving something far beyond numbers.
Ololade Ayelabola, a 500-level Computer Science student at UNILAG, began her walk on October 1.
She chose UNILAG’s indoor sports centre as the venue, aiming to cover 120km initially.
Not only did she reach her target, but she also went beyond, adding another 10km to make it 130.62km, completing 2,058 laps inside the arena.
The walk was not just about physical endurance but also a message to challenge fashion industry stereotypes.
Having faced rejection from fashion events twice due to her height, Ayelabola was determined to make her mark and advocate for greater inclusivity.
She explained that her journey was not just for herself but for all those models who have been held back by outdated standards.
Throughout her walk, Ololade Ayelabola showcased stunning designs by Nigerian designers, including creations from the UNILAG Theatre Arts Department.
She was joined by 34 other models, all united to shine a spotlight on Nigeria’s lively fashion scene and boost the nation’s tourism.This event was not just about breaking a record.
This achievement also brings Ololade Ayelabola close to breaking a 41-year-old record.
The previous record of 114.4km was set by Roberta Brown and Lorraine McCourt in Dublin, Ireland in 1983.
Ayelabola’s distance of 130.62km has now surpassed this, and her effort is currently awaiting official confirmation from Guinness World Records.
This journey is more than just a record; it is a testament to resilience, creativity, and the desire to create change.
