The University of Lagos (UNILAG) is gearing up for its 55th convocation ceremony, where 561 out of 16,409 graduating students will receive first-class degrees.
This impressive feat was announced by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, during a press briefing at the Senate Chambers.
According to Prof. Ogunsola, 9,684 students will be awarded first degrees and diplomas, while 6,659 will receive postgraduate degrees.
Professor Ogunsola also showcased several notable achievements from 2024. One significant milestone was the establishment of the MED-AFRICA Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) Laboratory, a first for any West African university.
Another highlight of 2024 was the launch of the Green Air Initiative, which introduced eight electric buses to the university’s transportation fleet. This eco-friendly initiative demonstrates UNILAG’s commitment to sustainability and reducing its environmental footprint.
The university’s accomplishments in 2024 extended beyond these initiatives, with notable achievements in sports, infrastructure development, innovations, boot camps, and even recognition in the Guinness World Records. Collectively, these milestones mark 2024 as a transformative year for UNILAG, solidifying its position as a leading institution of higher learning in West Africa.
Additionally, 66 students will graduate from the UNILAG Business School. The convocation ceremony will also recognize outstanding students, including Damilare Haroun ADEBAKIN and Samuel Akinade BADEKALE, who both graduated with a 5.0 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) from the Department of Cell Biology and Genetics, Faculty of Science.
The 55th convocation ceremony will take place from January 10 to 17, 2025, with various events scheduled throughout the week.
These include a Special Jumat Service, Convocation Lecture, and the conferment of honorary degrees on distinguished individuals, such as Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Mr. Kola Adesina.
The Vice-Chancellor also took the opportunity to present the university’s scorecard for 2024, highlighting achievements such as the establishment of the MED-AFRICA Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) Laboratory, the Green Air Initiative, and the signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with 14 universities across Africa, Europe, and the Americas.
